Position Title: Art Teacher
Reports To: Building Principal / School Administrator
Employment Status: Full-Time
Certification: Michigan Teaching Certificate with appropriate Visual Arts endorsement
The Art Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality visual arts instruction that develops students' creativity, artistic skills, critical thinking, and appreciation of the visual arts. The teacher will create an engaging, inclusive, and supportive learning environment while implementing Michigan academic standards and school curriculum. The Art Teacher will provide instruction appropriate to students' developmental levels and abilities and will encourage students to explore a variety of artistic media, techniques, and creative processes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Develop and implement engaging visual arts lessons aligned with Michigan Visual Arts Standards and school curriculum.
- Provide instruction in drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, design, mixed media, digital art, and other appropriate visual arts disciplines.
- Establish clear learning objectives and communicate expectations for student achievement.
- Teach students fundamental artistic techniques, principles of design, art vocabulary, and creative processes.
- Encourage creativity, self-expression, experimentation, and individual artistic development.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the academic, developmental, and learning needs of all students.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and stimulating art classroom, including appropriate management of art materials and equipment.
- Teach students proper procedures for the safe use, storage, and disposal of art materials and equipment.
- Assess student learning through projects, portfolios, class participation, critiques, presentations, and other appropriate assessment methods.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, progress, and achievement.
- Provide constructive feedback that supports students' artistic growth and academic development.
- Display and celebrate student artwork throughout the school and, when appropriate, in community exhibitions or school events.
- Integrate technology and digital tools into art instruction when appropriate.
- Incorporate connections between visual arts and other academic disciplines.
- Promote appreciation and understanding of diverse artists, cultures, artistic traditions, and perspectives.
- Communicate regularly and professionally with parents/guardians regarding student progress and concerns.
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, support staff, and other school personnel to support student success.
- Participate in professional development activities and remain current with effective instructional practices and developments in arts education.
- Participate in staff meetings, professional learning communities, conferences, school activities, and other assigned responsibilities.
- Support school policies, procedures, and expectations for student conduct and academic achievement.
- Maintain appropriate classroom and student records.
- Assist with art-related school programs, exhibitions, performances, competitions, and extracurricular activities as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the building administrator or school leadership.
- Establish and maintain a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment.
- Implement consistent classroom management strategies that promote student engagement and responsible behavior.
- Teach students appropriate procedures for handling tools, equipment, supplies, and classroom materials.
- Maintain high expectations for student participation, creativity, behavior, and academic achievement.
- Promote collaboration, respect for others' work, and constructive peer critique.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with the appropriate Visual Arts endorsement.
- Demonstrated knowledge of visual arts concepts, techniques, materials, and instructional practices.
- Successful completion of required Michigan teacher certification requirements.
- Ability to effectively communicate and work collaboratively with students, families, colleagues, and administrators.
- Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
- Ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse student learning needs.
- Commitment to creating an equitable, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment.
