We are home to specialists in Italian literature, history, linguistics, film and culture. We offer BA degrees in Italian Studies along with a number of combined language degrees, including a BA in Italian with other Modern Languages, Management Studies, Film Studies, History of Art, Latin, and Philosophy. At postgraduate level we offer an MA in Language, Culture and History:
Italian Studies, a wide range of interdisciplinary MA programmes in subjects including Comparative Literature, Film Studies, Translation Studies, and doctoral training in several fields.(please visit for more information).
The post holder will contribute to teaching primarily in Italian language at undergraduate level.
Depending on their expertise and areas of specialism, they may also teach in other subjects such as Italian history, literature or culture, and/or in Comparative Literature or other subjects relevant to SELCS-CMII, as allocated by the Programme Director of Italian and the Head of Department of SELCS. They may also supervise BA dissertations.
The standard teaching load is approximately 320 contact hours annually. All teaching is done in person, with additional materials delivered using Moodle VLE.The post holder will be expected to participate in departmental events and contribute to the intellectual life of Italian Studies and SELCS. They are entitled to devote 15 per cent of working hours to scholarship and/or research. This is a full-time role, with the total hours of work required equating to 1.0 full time equivalent per year.
The successful candidate will be expected to take up the position on 1 September 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. This is a fixed-term maternity cover position until 31 December 2027.Please see the Job description for further details.
The post holder will hold a postgraduate qualification in Italian Language Teaching, Italian Linguistics, or a related field, and will have expert knowledge of Italian language teaching, including language-teaching methodologies.
They will have complete fluency in both Italian and English, as well as experience in developing Italian language teaching and assessment materials.
The successful candidate will possess excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills when working with colleagues and students.
They will also have a proven ability to work effectively as part of a team, including sharing modules and teaching materials with colleagues.
They will be able to demonstrate adaptability and flexibility in their approach to teaching and working practices.
