We are seeking an enthusiastic and adaptable Generalist Cover Tutor to join our education team at HMP Thameside. The Role

As a Generalist Cover Tutor, you will deliver high-quality teaching and learning across a variety of subjects, ensuring continuity of education and maintaining learner engagement during tutor absences.

You will support learners from a range of educational backgrounds and abilities, helping them develop essential skills in literacy, numeracy, employability, digital learning, and personal development.

Key Responsibilities Teaching & Learning
  • Plan and deliver engaging, inclusive lessons tailored to individual learner needs.
  • Create a positive and supportive learning environment that promotes participation and achievement.
  • Differentiate teaching approaches to support learners with diverse abilities and backgrounds.
  • Embed literacy, numeracy, digital skills, and employability skills into lessons.
  • Motivate learners to engage positively with education and personal development.
  • Provide cover across a range of curriculum subjects as required.
Assessment & Progress
  • Assess learners' starting points and develop Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
  • Conduct formative and summative assessments.
  • Monitor, track, and record learner progress accurately.
  • Provide constructive feedback to support achievement and progression.
  • Prepare learners for internal and external qualifications.
Learner Support
  • Act as a positive role model, helping learners build confidence and resilience.
  • Identify barriers to learning and work with support teams to address individual needs.
  • Promote wellbeing, personal development, and rehabilitation.
  • Support learners in setting and achieving realistic educational and career goals.
Quality & Compliance
  • Maintain accurate learner records, registers, and assessment documentation.
  • Support quality assurance activities, including observations and audits.
  • Ensure delivery meets awarding body and quality standards.
  • Adhere to safeguarding, equality and diversity, and health & safety requirements.
Teamwork & Development
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, prison staff, and wider support teams.
  • Participate in training, CPD activities, and team meetings.
  • Contribute to curriculum development and the sharing of best practice.
  • Provide flexible support across the education provision when required.
What We're Looking For
  • Maths and English qualifications (Level 3 required for Functional Skills delivery).
  • Teaching qualification at Level 5 or above (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS or equivalent), or willingness to work towards one.
  • Experience delivering Functional Skills Maths and English from Entry Level through to Level 2.
  • Strong classroom management and learner engagement skills.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and administrative abilities.
  • Experience producing and maintaining ILPs, learner records, registers, and progress tracking documentation.
  • Ability to adapt teaching styles to support diverse learner needs.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding, equality and diversity, and health & safety practices.
  • Resilience, professionalism, and confidence working in a challenging yet highly rewarding environment.
  • A genuine passion for supporting learners to achieve qualifications and improve their future opportunities.
  • Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) qualification or willingness to work towards one.
