Technician - INTERNAL

As a Technician (Education), you will provide essential technical support to undergraduate and postgraduate laboratory-based teaching across a range of life science disciplines. Working as part of a small, supportive team and under the supervision of a Senior Technician, you will prepare practical classes, maintain teaching laboratories and equipment, and ensure activities are delivered safely and efficiently and contribute to the teaching of technical skills.

The role supports modules in areas such as Biochemistry, Genetics, Forensic Science, Nutrition and Dietetics, Pharmacology and Human Physiology, and sits within a wider cross-campus, multidisciplinary education technical service. You will primarily be based at Guy's or Waterloo campus, with flexibility to rotate between sites to support service delivery, skills development and team resilience. Outside of term time, you will contribute to project work to enhance education delivery and engage with wider technical networks, sustainability initiatives and CPD activities.

This is a developmental role offering appointment at Grade
3. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to progress to Grade 4 as competence and independence develop. This is a full time (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

• Minimum level 3 qualification, e.g. A levels, AS levels, International Baccalaureate diploma or other Level 3 qualification, plus work experience in a relevant technical/scientific post(s) OR Knowledge and skills gained through work experience in relevant technical or scientific posts.
• Evidence of an active commitment to skills and knowledge development through vocational training and on-the-job experience.
• Knowledge of a range of technical or practical skills and procedures and their impact on the environment.
• Ability to apply learnt techniques to the work context.
• Clear spoken and written communication skills, with competent computer use and strong interpersonal and influencing/behavioral skills.
• Solutions-focused self-starter, with good prioritisation and organisational skills.
• Flexible team-worker who is responsive to colleagues.
• An understanding of Health & Safety regulations governing area of work, particularly relating to laboratory waste disposal and recycling.

Desirable:

• Evidence of a commitment to professional development including professional registration, such as RSciTech and a willingness to learn new techniques.
• Experience in supervising/advising less experienced colleagues, monitoring, and providing feedback on performance.
• Able and willing to provide support beyond core hours, as required.e criteria
