About us UCL’s Undergraduate Preparatory Certificate (UPC) is a one-year full-time foundation course for international students of high academic potential. It provides knowledge, skills and support for around 250 students each year who plan to study an undergraduate degree at UCL or other Russell Group UK universities, but whose qualifications do not allow them direct admission. Academic content is positioned between A-level and undergraduate, delivered by experienced UCL Lecturers, and assessed following UCL regulations.
The UPC is based within the Centre for Languages and International Education, within the IOE.Modern European History and Politics is one of six subject options on the UPC for the Humanities pathway (UPCH), with a cohort of 40
-50 students aiming towards a diverse range of undergraduate degrees. It introduces students to major aspects of European political culture and history as well as contemporary issues affecting Western democracy and international relations. Taught content is framed around six key topics: the Enlightenment & the French Revolution 1748-98, nations and nationalism , modern political thought, democracy and populism, the Cold War and International Relations.
Students attend lectures, seminars and classes, complete regular formative assessments, and undertake an independent (3000-word) research project.
About the role
This position is envisaged as a ‘team teaching’ role, working alongside and under the guidance of the lead tutor to deliver and support teaching and learning on Modern European History and Politics (with some contributions to, or collaboration with, other UPCH subjects). The successful applicant will be responsible for leading seminars, supervising research projects, undertaking marking and assessment, designing lectures and resources, and overseeing the smooth running of the course.
About youYou will demonstrate an aptitude for undergraduate-style teaching in a Russell Group setting and will be equipped to support a diverse cohort of international learners in their progression to undergraduate study. You will have a PhD in a relevant discipline (PhD candidates with a thesis close to final submission stage will also be considered) and a first degree in history, politics, or other international relations.
The post will offer opportunities for career development, including supporting UCL ARENA/HEA Fellowship and you will be expected to undertake scholarship activities, with the support of the Centre for Languages and International Education.

Salary brackets for this post are 43,981–54,019 inclusive of London Allowance.
