The role

Senior Energy Market Manager

London/Warwick - Hybrid

The UK Regulatory Strategy team works to shape and influence key energy market policy and regulatory issues - to enable a secure, clean, affordable and investable energy transition.

We are looking for a Senior Energy Market Manager. In this key role, you will work in a dynamic, collaborative environment to develop National Grid's thinking on future energy market design. National Grid plays an essential role in delivering government priorities (e.g. economic growth, affordable energy and Net Zero) and it is essential that we play our part in shaping the future of the energy system.

Examples of current key topics/projects are:

  • How electricity market design should evolve to support government policy including delivering net zero, supporting economic growth and reducing energy bills.
  • The interaction between markets and strategic planning (e.g. SSEP, RESP) and how these should be complementary tools for achieving policy goals.
  • Potential reforms to wholesale and balancing markets in GB as well as reforms to market mechanisms such as CfDs and the Capacity Market.
  • Assessing the way in which wider energy sector developments will impact on energy markets including: negotiations over the EU's Internal Energy Market; the increasing uptake of distributed generation and the role of consumer led flexibility; the way in which cost of living and affordability concerns are impacting on policy choices over energy market design.
What's in it for you

Salary between £85,000 p.a. and £105,000 p.a. depending on experience.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance of up to 40% - a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also receive private medical insurance and the option to a full EV company car or cash alternative. Additionally, you will have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.

What you'll be doing

Future Energy Markets

As part of a team, to develop National Grid positions on the future of energy markets including but not limited to wholesale and balancing electricity markets, market mechanisms such as the CfD and capacity market as well as gas markets.

To develop National Grid's position on the balance between a planned energy system and one where markets play a key role in determining outcomes.

Policy development:

Horizon scanning to evaluate emerging opportunities and threats in the policy and regulatory landscape.

Analysis of policy and regulatory developments to guide strategic decisions.

Translate insights into high-quality presentations/briefing for the Board and Executive teams.

Market reforms & advocacy:

Manage and coordinate positions on key reform projects.

Lead on consultation responses and external briefings, ensuring alignment with business goals and leveraging insights from internal and external stakeholders.

Stakeholder engagement:

Establish and maintain a broad network of internal and external contacts, including Ofgem, NESO, Government, and industry stakeholders, to influence regulatory reforms.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and consistency in policy and regulatory positions across National Grid businesses.

About you

Experience of developing and interacting with energy market, policy and regulatory frameworks.

A strong strategic thinker, with the ability to see the big picture, but also address shorter term more tactical issues.

Ability to challenge entrenched thinking in a constructive manner; a willingness and openness to receiving similar challenge.

An excellent communicator who can translate complex, technical concepts into easily digestible plain English, and work well with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

Ability to work with and influence board, executive level and senior leaders within an organisation, and engage effectively at all levels across an organisation.
