Role DescriptionCO2
Volt is developing a next-generation CO₂ electrolyser technology that converts carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide for subsequent conversion to chemicals and fuels: providing a route to a net-zero chemicals and energy sector. We are seeking a Project Scientist to drive the development and testing of advanced electrode structures with a focus on electrode formulation and testing. This is an incredible opportunity for a driven, ambitious individual who wants to use their scientific knowledge to deliver real-world impact.
Working with the CTO and Senior Scientist you will deliver our electrode formulation programme, as we scale our technology from the lab to commercial environment. This will require a broad expertise from ink formulation through to electrode fabrication and performance evaluation. You will also work closely with electrolyser stack engineers to integrate optimized electrodes into small-stack systems.
- Develop and optimize electrode formulations for use on gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs)
- Investigate electrochemical and interfacial phenomena affecting activity, selectivity, and stability
- Characterize electrode structure, composition, and transport properties
- Evaluate electrochemical performance of both catalysts and small electrolyser devices
- Collaborate with stack and system engineers to ensure cathode compatibility with electrolyser architectures and operating conditions
- Conduct degradation studies and post‑mortem analysis to identify failure mechanisms
- Maintain detailed experimental records and prepare technical reports, publications, and internal presentations
- Support scale‑up and manufacturability considerations for electrode formulations
- PhD or Masters level degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field
- Background in electrochemistry, preferably including electrocatalysis and electrode materials
- Familiarity with CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR) chemistry
- Experience with electrochemical testing techniques (e.g., CV, CA, EIS) and product analysis
- Ability to independently design experiments and interpret structure–property–performance relationships
- Hands on experience of CO 2 or water electrolyser development
- Knowledge of gas diffusion electrodes and multi‑phase interfaces
- Experience with polymer binders, ionomers, and membrane–electrode interfaces
- Background in surface characterization techniques
- Experience transitioning lab‑scale electrodes toward scalable manufacturing
- Opportunity to work on cutting‑edge carbon utilization technology with real‑world impact
- Access to advanced materials synthesis and characterization facilities
- Competitive compensation and opportunity to take develop a leading role in an early‑stage start‑up
- A mission‑driven environment focused on carbon utilization and climate impact
