Our client is currently seeking a Chartered Mechanical Drainage Engineer to join their team. The role will primarily be focused on the Lower Thames Crossing (LTC) programme and other major highways and tunnelling infrastructure projects. This contract position offers a hybrid working pattern, with 2-3 days per week in the London office and the remainder remote.
Key Responsibilities:- Lead and support the design of pumped drainage systems for tunnels, highways, and major infrastructure assets
- Deliver mechanical design solutions for tunnel drainage, sump and pump arrangements, rising mains, valve chambers, and internal drainage networks
- Review and assure designs produced by consultants and contractors
- Ensure compliance with relevant standards (DMRB, CDM Regulations, British Standards, and client specifications)
- Support integration of drainage systems within wider tunnel and highway M&E systems
- Provide technical input to risk, constructability, and value engineering reviews
- Interface with civil, electrical, systems, and construction teams
- Support design reviews, assurance gateways, and stakeholder meetings
- Chartered Mechanical Engineer (CEng - IMechE or equivalent)
- Strong mechanical engineering background with demonstrable experience in pumped drainage system design
- Proven experience delivering drainage solutions for tunnels, highways, or major infrastructure projects
- Experience with tunnel internal drainage, pumped systems, and confined infrastructure environments
- Knowledge of drainage design within road tunnels and highway assets
- Understanding of CDM regulations and safety-critical design environments
- Ability to work within large, multidisciplinary project teams
Experience:
- Previous involvement on Lower Thames Crossing (LTC) or comparable major UK infrastructure schemes
- Experience working for or alongside National Highways
- Familiarity with asset management and operational drainage considerations in tunnel environments
