Responsibilities- Review fire strategies for new-build and existing buildings in accordance with:
Approved Document B, BS 9991 / BS 9999, and relevant British and European Standards. - Ability to prepare and create strategies would be beneficial.
- Undertake fire engineering assessments/notes for bespoke site scenarios and deviation from tested details related to passive fire stopping.
- Apply performance-based fire engineering approaches where prescriptive guidance is insufficient.
- Liaise with Architects, MEP engineers, and contractors.
- Review design changes and assess impact on fire safety compliance.
- Provide technical input during construction and respond to design queries.
- Participate in site inspections and compliance reviews where required.
- Contribute to internal technical development and quality assurance processes.
- Review project fire strategies, employer’s requirements, and specifications to identify passive fire protection obligations.
- Fire compartmentation layouts review
- Fire stopping and penetration sealing details
- Cavity barriers and fire-resisting construction interfaces
- Assess service penetrations and construction interfaces against:
Approved Document B, Tested fire performance evidence (e.g. EN 1366, BS 476). - Produce and review:
Fire stopping schedules and specifications, Technical sketches and coordinated drawings (2D / 3D). - Coordinate with architectural, MEP, structural, and contractor teams to resolve compliance and constructability issues.
- Support BIM-led coordination using Revit and Navisworks (where applicable).
- Undertake site inspections, surveys, and technical audits of passive fire installations.
- Provide technical support during construction and respond to RFIs.
- Assist with handover documentation, and compliance evidence.
- Experience working as a Fire Engineer within the UK built environment.
- Strong knowledge of UK fire safety legislation, guidance, and standards.
- Knowledge on passive fire stopping.
- Ability to carry out fire technical assessments/notes.
- Degree in Fire Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Working towards or holding professional registration.
- Membership or progression towards membership of IFE or equivalent professional body.
- Experience in passive fire protection design, inspection, or compliance within the UK.
- Strong understanding of UK fire safety legislation and guidance (ADB, Building Regulations).
- Ability to interpret fire test evidence and certification.
- Experience producing technical reports and drawings.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience using Revit / Navisworks or other BIM tools.
- Knowledge of third-party certification schemes (e.g. FIRAS, BM TRADA).
- Site experience within live construction environments.
- Awareness of the Building Safety Act and Gateway requirements.
- Degree or HNC/HND in Construction, Engineering, Fire Engineering, or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
- Working towards or holding professional membership (e.g. IFSM, IFE) is advantageous.
