OverviewThe Engineering Shift Lead will provide leadership for the shift team and through them safely deliver a service of excellent value, ensuring that everything works when it needs to and experiences minimal downtime.
Main Tasks and Responsibilities- Supervise team leadership, technical authority, training and performance management, ensuring high quality of work from the team.
- Assist in co‑ordination of contractors in response to scheduled works and emergencies using appropriate working systems (e.g., documented escalation procedures). Deputise for other members of the team during absences as expected.
- Ensure shift‑based personnel and subcontract staff undertake works in accordance with safe working practices, quality standards and best practice methods.
- Carry out routine and essential planned preventative maintenance tasks across LV distribution systems, associated plant and equipment, and HVAC mechanical cooling and heating systems as determined by the concept systems work orders, safely, efficiently and effectively; isolate plant and systems in accordance with safety requirements.
- Investigate faults, identify root causes, and prepare accurate and timely reports on plant and equipment failures, communicating findings with all relevant stakeholders.
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of the building layout, function and complexities through continuous assessment, staff training and personal development.
- Assist with various ad‑hoc duties as reasonably required from time to time.
- Pay due care and attention to health and safety procedures, and recommend both on‑ and off‑site measures to ensure safety for yourself, your team and others.
- Ensure health and safety legislative requirements are met, such as DSE assessment and health & safety awareness, and that your shift is adequately trained for the tasks they carry out.
- Shall not undertake tasks or functions that endanger self or others and shall ensure any unsafe acts witnessed are challenged immediately.
- Report hazards or unsafe acts through the accident and safety reporting scheme to relevant managers.
- Undertake any training required for the job role.
- Performance‑manage your team reports (engineers & technicians) with yearly reviews, full records, training logs and personal development plans kept up to date.
- Set and agree performance measures; spend time with team reports ensuring measures are meaningful, relevant, understood and met.
- Listen to the team and work to ensure issues are logged and resolved in the spirit of continuous improvement.
- Site governance responsibilities outside operational hours: ensure contractors comply with the airport’s requirements and standards and that works pose no risk to assets or operations.
- Follow the concept process and provide all relevant and correct data for each job/task as required by concept.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement within your shift.
- Work in partnership with other shift leads to achieve consistent and efficient operational output.
- Head of Contracts – contractor or 3rd‑party maintenance issues/updates.
- Head of Asset Integration – technical, mechanical/electrical authority and steer; input on future asset design; input on current asset optimisation; updates on new asset integration.
- Head of Works governance and project delivery: visibility of contractors on site – projects/works handover.
- Extensive experience in building services engineering.
- Excellent technical knowledge (HVAC and critical engineering plant and systems).
- Experience in a customer‑facing environment.
- City & Guilds, BTEC or NVQ 3 in engineering‑related subject.
- General education to 'O' level, GCSE level standard.
- Monitor and uphold a high quality of service and products to clients.
- Manage time, plan and organise work tasks, monitor and meet deadlines.
- Keep documentation orderly for others to take over.
