PurposeThe HV Electrical Lead is responsible for providing specialist high‑voltage (HV) electrical leadership across the UK utility‑scale Solar PV and BESS portfolio, supporting projects from development through construction, commissioning, and handover to operations. The role ensures all HV and MV electrical systems are designed, installed, tested, and energised safely, compliantly, and in line with UK grid requirements and project performance expectations.
Acting as the technical authority for HV systems, the role provides assurance, challenge, and governance across EPC contractors and electrical design partners. This position reports to the Engineering Manager.
- Act as the HV/MV electrical subject‑matter expert across all solar PV and BESS projects
- Provide technical leadership on substations, grid connections, transformers, switch gear, and protection systems
- Review and approve electrical designs from EPCs, ICPs, and consultants
- Ensure all electrical systems are safe, compliant, and optimised for performance and reliability
- Provide technical challenge to drive best‑in‑class engineering solutions
- Lead technical review of grid connection agreements and compliance requirements
- Ensure full adherence to UK Grid Code, DNO/TSO requirements, G99/G100, and relevant standards
- Oversee and validate third‑party grid studies (fault level, load flow, protection coordination, harmonic analysis)
- Act as technical interface with DNOs, TSOs, and ICPs throughout the project lifecycle
- Support resolution of grid‑related technical constraints and design challenges
- Provide HV electrical input from early development through to commissioning and handover
- Support EPC interface, responding to technical queries (RFIs, TQs, design clarifications)
- Ensure alignment between design intent, procurement, and construction execution
- Support handover to Asset Management, ensuring systems meet operational requirements
- Support site delivery teams during HV installation, testing, energisation, and commissioning
- Witness and sign off key electrical testing activities (substations, protection systems, grid connection works)
- Troubleshoot HV/MV electrical issues during construction and early operations
- Ensure as‑built systems fully comply with approved designs and grid requirements
- Support energisation planning and execution activities
- Interface with EPC contractors, consultants, lenders, and independent engineers
- Support technical due diligence processes and lender advisory requirements
- Provide engineering assurance across all HV electrical deliverables
- Collaborate closely with Development, Construction, and Asset Management teams
- Act as escalation point for complex HV electrical technical issues
- 5-10+ years of experience in HV/MV electrical engineering within power, utilities, or renewable energy
- Strong experience in utility‑scale Solar PV, BESS, or grid infrastructure projects
- Previous experience within an Independent Connection Provider (ICP) will be prioritised
- Deep understanding of HV systems, substations, protection systems, and grid connection design
- Strong knowledge of UK grid standards and processes (DNO/TSO, Grid Code, G99/G100)
- Experience reviewing and interpreting electrical studies (load flow, fault level, protection coordination, power quality)
- Exposure to HV commissioning, testing, and energisation activities
- Ability to critically review and challenge EPC and consultant designs
- Strong understanding of electrical safety regulations and compliance frameworks
