Arup’s land quality team forms part of the Specialist Environmental Services business, covering a range of environmental specialisms within the Climate and Sustainability Services group. The land quality team coordinate, manage and produce contaminated land assessments, working with a variety of technical disciplines on a wide range of different types of development. The team have expertise in the assessment of ground contamination, material and waste management, environmental permitting, due diligence and water quality.
TheOpportunity
We are seeking an energetic, enthusiastic environmental consultant to work within our land quality team to support delivery of projects.
The position is for an Environmental Consultant to work within our Climate and Sustainability Services business in London. You will support delivery of contaminated land assessments for projects. Clients will include private developers, public sector authorities and other organisations. You will be working in a multi-disciplinary environment alongside other environmental, planning, engineering and urban design specialists, and will work closely with technical disciplines (both internal and external to Arup) to deliver high-quality environmental consultancy services in contaminated land and brownfield development.
You will be responsible for:
Supporting technical delivery of contaminated land assessments. Collaborating with and delegating work to junior staff supporting the delivery of contaminated land assessments. Writing environmental reports including preparing ground conditions/contamination chapters in environmental statements. Supporting ground investigations working with ground investigation contractors and liaising with client teams. Assisting with project management activities including programming and budget control. Interfacing with multi-disciplinary project teams.
Assisting with contaminated land team business development and marketing. Contributing to bids and presentations.
The individual will require the following knowledge, skills and attributes:
- Honours degree in a relevant subject. Member of a relevant institute (e.g. CIWEM, IES, Geological Society of London, RSC) and working towards Chartered status.
- Knowledge of working within a commercial environment, including client liaison, programme and time management, quality assurance and financial/budget control.
- An awareness of contaminated land assessment from initial land acquisitions, through desk study, investigation and assessment to remediation and to final remediation verification is essential.
- A basic understanding, in some other areas of brownfield development would be useful which could include waste classification, excavated materials management including the use of the DoWCoP, environmental permitting, and Environmental Impact Assessment.
- Awareness in other areas would be advantageous such as asbestos in soils, hydrogeology, DQRA, specific remediation techniques, ground gas or vapour assessment or other topics such as radio logically contaminated land.
