Job Overview
The Principal HSE Engineer is responsible for delivering and providing technical authority in process safety engineering for LNG and onshore low carbon fuel projects. Leads hazard identification, risk assessment, and consequence evaluation activities, ensuring major accident hazards are systematically identified, understood, and addressed through risk-informed design.
Drives the consistent application of process safety methodologies and ensures study outputs are robust, defensible, and effectively integrated into engineering decisions. Supports environmental assessments as a complementary discipline to enable safe, compliant, and responsible project delivery.
ResponsibilitiesKey tasks and Responsibilities
- Define and maintain the Safety Engineering Basis, establishing methodologies, standards, and acceptance criteria for process safety studies and risk management activities
- Deliver and provide technical leadership for process safety studies, including HAZID, HAZOP, Fire and Explosion Analysis, QRA, and ALARP assessments, ensuring outputs are technically robust and consistently applied across the project
- Undertake and guide consequence modelling for fire, explosion, and hazardous release scenarios, ensuring risks are appropriately quantified, interpreted, and communicated to support decision‑making
- Drive the integration of process safety outcomes into engineering design, influencing plant layout, process safeguards, safety‑critical systems, and overall risk reduction strategies
- Develop Fire & Gas detection philosophies, including detector mapping and coverage assessments, ensuring alignment with identified hazard scenarios and escalation potential
- Support the definition of fire protection requirements from a process safety perspective, ensuring credible major accident scenarios are effectively mitigated
- Interface with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure consistent application of process safety requirements across all design deliverables and project phases
- Support risk management activities, including identification, assessment, and tracking of key process safety risks through to resolution, ensuring appropriate visibility and mitigation
- Provide technical guidance within the process safety discipline, promoting consistency, quality, and continuous improvement in delivery
- Contribute to environmental studies as a secondary responsibility, including GHG emissions assessments, flaring and venting analysis, and energy efficiency considerations, ensuring alignment with project sustainability objectives
- Participate in client engagements, technical assurance reviews, and regulatory discussions, representing process safety as a subject matter expert
Essential Qualifications and Education
- Degree in Engineering or equivalent, with significant experience in process safety engineering within LNG, oil & gas, or low carbon fuel projects
- Proven capability in delivering and technically leading process safety studies, including HAZID, HAZOP, QRA, and consequence modelling
- Strong understanding of fire and explosion hazards, dispersion analysis, and quantitative risk assessment methodologies
- Practical experience with industry‑standard consequence and risk modelling software (e.g. PHAST, FLACS) is preferred
- Experience integrating process safety requirements into engineering design and influencing technical decisions
- Exposure to environmental assessments (e.g. emissions, flaring, venting, energy efficiency) as a supporting discipline
- Familiarity with relevant international codes, standards, and regulatory frameworks applicable to LNG and low carbon fuel developments
- Strong communication, coordination, and influencing skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams and contribute to decision-making at project level
