My client is seeking a talented Principal Highway Engineer to lead the delivery of innovative highways, public realm and active travel projects across London and the UK. This is an outstanding opportunity for a Principal Highway Engineer who enjoys providing technical leadership, managing multidisciplinary teams and mentoring engineers while remaining actively involved in the design and delivery of industry‑leading projects.
OpportunityAs a Principal Highway Engineer, you will lead the technical delivery of complex highways projects while supporting the development of the wider engineering team. You will oversee multiple projects, provide expert technical guidance and ensure designs meet the highest standards of quality and compliance. Working closely with clients and internal teams, you will contribute to project strategy, mentor engineers and help deliver innovative solutions across a varied portfolio of highways and public realm schemes.
WhatYou Will Be Doing
- Lead the delivery of highways, streetscape and public realm projects from concept through to construction.
- Provide technical leadership and quality assurance across multiple design teams.
- Develop highway designs in accordance with DMRB, TfL Streetscape Guidance, LTN 1/20, LCDS, TSRGD and other relevant standards.
- Manage project programmes, resources and technical outputs.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and key stakeholders.
- Mentor and develop engineers across the team.
- Oversee statutory undertaker coordination and multidisciplinary project delivery.
- Ensure compliance with CDM 2015 and industry best practice.
- Identify innovative engineering solutions that deliver value for clients.
- Support the continued growth and technical excellence of the highways business.
- A degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent experience.
- Extensive highways design experience within a consultancy environment.
- Excellent technical knowledge of highways design standards.
- Strong project leadership and coordination experience.
- Experience managing multidisciplinary project teams.
- Excellent client‑facing and communication skills.
- Experience mentoring and developing engineers.
- Strong commercial awareness and project management skills.
- Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng), or working towards professional accreditation.
Salary: £60,000 – £67,000 per year, dependent on experience.
