Grid Connection Project Manager

HV Transmission Infrastructure | Renewable Energy (Battery Energy Storage)

Exeter, UK (Hybrid)

Our client is one of the UK's leading renewable energy developers and asset owners, with a substantial pipeline of utility‑scale energy projects that will play a critical role in accelerating the transition to a low‑carbon electricity system. As the business continues to expand its project delivery capability, they are looking to appoint an experienced Grid Connection Project Manager to lead the delivery of complex high‑voltage grid connection projects across the UK.

This is a client‑side project management role with responsibility for delivering transmission and substation connection works from early development through design, procurement, construction, commissioning and energisation. Working closely with National Grid, NESO, DNOs, contractors and engineering partners, you will play a key role in ensuring critical infrastructure is delivered safely, efficiently and on programme.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a business that has successfully delivered some of Europe's largest Battery Energy Storage projects and is continuing to invest heavily in new renewable energy infrastructure.

The Company

Our client has established itself as one of the UK's most ambitious independent renewable energy developers, delivering and operating large‑scale Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage assets nationwide. With a growing portfolio of projects requiring complex transmission connections, they continue to invest in building a market‑leading Grid Delivery function.

The business offers a collaborative and technically driven environment where project professionals are empowered to take ownership, influence delivery strategy and work alongside some of the industry's leading engineering and infrastructure specialists.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the delivery of high‑voltage grid connection and substation projects on behalf of the client, from project inception through to energisation and handover.
  • Manage project interfaces with National Grid, NESO, DNOs, ICPs, EPC contractors, consultants and key stakeholders.
  • Oversee engineering design, procurement, construction, commissioning and project close‑out activities.
  • Develop and manage project programmes, ensuring key milestones, budgets and delivery objectives are achieved.
  • Review and approve technical documentation, engineering designs and contractor deliverables.
  • Monitor contractor performance across programme, quality, commercial and safety metrics while proactively managing project risks.
  • Support procurement activities, tender evaluations, contract negotiations and contractor appointments.
  • Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations, HV safety requirements, industry standards and project governance processes.
  • Chair project meetings, coordinate stakeholder engagement and provide regular reporting to senior leadership.
Experience & Qualifications
  • Proven experience delivering HV transmission, substation or grid connection projects at 132kV and above.
  • Strong understanding of UK grid connection processes and working relationships with National Grid, NESO, DNOs or TOs.
  • Experience working within client‑side, EPC, principal contractor, utility or Owner's Engineer environments.
  • Demonstrable delivery experience across major transmission infrastructure, substations, SGT installations, AIS/GIS substations or bay extension projects.
  • Strong understanding of programme management, contractor management and multidisciplinary project delivery.
  • Knowledge of NEC contracts, CDM Regulations and HV construction best practice.
  • Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline is preferred.
  • APM, PRINCE2, PMP or equivalent project management qualifications would be advantageous.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, communication and leadership skills.
Benefits
  • Competitive salary with performance‑related bonus.
  • Hybrid and flexible working arrangements.
  • Comprehensive pension and benefits package.
  • Opportunity to deliver nationally significant grid infrastructure supporting the UK's energy transition.
  • Work across a portfolio of utility‑scale renewable energy developments and transmission connection projects.
  • High levels of autonomy within a growing Grid Delivery team.
  • Long‑term career progression within one of the UK's leading renewable energy developers.
