Field Engineer (Sustainability – Civil)
Circa £56,000 + 5% Welcome Bonus + £1100 Flex Allowance + up to 15% Bonus + Benefits
What is the role?Being a Field Engineer at London Gatwick, you are contributing to the development and growth of the world's most efficient runway airport. Working in a fast‑paced, live environment and offering development opportunities, you will have the chance to work with supportive and skilled colleagues who take pride in their work.
Key projects include the construction of a new energy centre, installation of the central heat network (2 km of large diameter pipework installation), construction of a new water filtration facility (including 4 km of underground pipework installation) and installation of EV charging facilities. Your role will be crucial in helping Gatwick achieve its sustainability goal of reducing emissions by 2030.
This is an excellent opportunity to observe and influence Gatwick's journey to Net Zero directly. As part of a multi‑disciplinary team of construction industry experts, you will be involved from the early stages of projects, defining technical scopes, aligning project delivery with business requirements, and ensuring these are carried through from design to construction and handover.
As a Field Engineer, you will work closely with the Project Management team to supervise multi‑disciplined construction projects. Your experience in a similar role, on multi‑million projects with a focus on health and safety, will ensure you can successfully support across all phases of the project from planning and execution to completion and handover.
What will you do?Reporting to the Senior Field Engineer or Programme Construction Manager, you will play a key role in the successful delivery of complex projects across London Gatwick. Working closely with internal teams and contractors to ensure the successful completion of projects and being involved in the end‑to‑end process.
Other duties include:
- Delivering regular site safety engagement on responsible projects, to ensure an emphasis on and compliance with Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) standards and promoting a positive HSE culture
- Quality Assurance, safeguarding the quality of work by identifying any deviations or deficiencies and promptly addressing them.
- Reviewing contractor CDM and quality, and handover submittals for quality and compliance
- Documentation, reviewing contractor documentation for content, quality and compliance. Keeping detailed records of site visits, observations, and any issues encountered.
- Working closely with contractors, designers, and other stakeholders to ensure smooth delivery and handover of the works.

The live environment at Gatwick requires all our teams to have a flexible and adaptable approach, strong problem‑solving skills, and an innovative outlook. Involved in projects from inception to completion, you'll work alongside multiple stakeholders. In addition, this role requires:
- Degree or equivalent qualified in Civil Engineering.
- Experience in delivering underground utility and civil infrastructure projects, preferably including district heating networks, utility diversions, new utility installations, duct routes, service crossings and associated civil engineering works.
- Good understanding of safe excavation practices, including HSG
47, permit‑to‑dig systems, utility detection and avoidance techniques. - Awareness of temporary traffic management requirements and experience coordinating works within operational, constrained or heavily regulated environments.
- Experience as a Field Engineer, Site Engineer, Section Engineer or equivalent role delivering complex civil engineering and infrastructure projects.
- Experience working on multi‑disciplinary projects valued at £10m+.
- Understanding of commissioning, handover, closeout and asset integration processes.
- Experience identifying, managing and mitigating Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) risks associated with construction activities.
