Our apprenticeships combine working in a great job, with training, development, and a competitive salary. You will be given dedicated time in your working week to focus on your studies. The Civil Engineering Senior Technician apprenticeship consists of an 36‑month opportunity to learn and to provide support to the Traffic, Street Lighting, Highways, Streetworks and Transportation Projects teams. We are responsible for improving Islington’s public highway. Your duties will include assisting engineers with design, analysis and implementation of traffic and highways schemes. You will gain an understanding of the work of the team and will work in a supported learning environment whilst working towards a nationally recognised Level 4 Civil Engineering Technician apprenticeship.

We welcome applications from anyone aged 16 or over who meets the essential criteria and is motivated to develop their career through this apprenticeship.

Eligibility

If we receive a high volume of applications, priority may be given to candidates who meet our apprenticeship criteria relating to local connection.

You will also need to meet apprenticeship course requirements including:

  • Not already hold a qualification at a similar or higher level in this subject area
  • Not have extensive prior skills or experience in this field (this apprenticeship is designed for those starting out or developing new skills)
  • Pass course suitability and eligibility assessments
  • Provide evidence of:
    • 5 GCSEs (grades 4–9 / A–C), including Maths and English;
    • Level 3 qualification e.g. A‑Levels, BTEC National Diploma or equivalent containing Maths as a key module/subject. Full course entry requirements available:

The Job
  • Design and implementation of Traffic, Street Lighting, Highways, and Transportation Projects schemes – Creating design drawings, risk assessments for end users and construction, and overseeing works on site, including helping create Traffic Management Orders.
  • Use technology systems such as Microsoft 365, AutoCAD, finance, and health and safety systems
  • Attend site visits, live work sites and meetings to monitor and manage progress and delivery of schemes.
  • Problem solve to find engineering solutions for traffic and highway issues.
  • Use mathematical skills in analysing and interpreting traffic surveys and collision data.
Training and Development
  • Complete a 3 year development programme leading to a Level 4 Civil Engineering Senior Technician qualification, which includes a HNC.
  • Participate in the Council’s apprenticeship network and various development activities.
  • Have access to a mentor.
