Role Description The Road Marking Charge Hand role is a full-time, on-site position based in London, responsible for leading and overseeing road marking operations on highways and local roads. Day-to-day tasks include supervising a small crew, planning work sequences, and coordinating the safe setup and removal of traffic management in line with company procedures and regulations. The role involves operating and monitoring road marking equipment, ensuring accurate application of thermoplastic, MMA, and cold paint markings, and checking that all work meets quality, safety, and specification standards.
The Charge Hand will complete site documentation, record materials used, report progress and issues to the supervisor or project manager, and support continuous improvement in productivity and sustainability. The role also requires liaising with clients or site representatives when necessary, promoting safe working practices, and mentoring less experienced team members.
Qualifications
- Experience in road marking operations, including practical knowledge of thermoplastic, MMA, and cold paint applications, and familiarity with highway specifications and standards.
- Proven team leadership skills, with the ability to coordinate crew activities, delegate tasks, and maintain a safe, efficient working environment on site.
- Strong understanding of health, safety, and environmental practices, including safe use of plant and equipment, traffic management principles, and adherence to risk assessments and method statements.
- Ability to interpret drawings and site layouts, measure work areas, and ensure accurate, consistent positioning of road markings and related materials.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with colleagues, contractors, and client representatives, and to complete clear site records and reports.
- Valid UK driving licence (HGV or trailer licence beneficial), with willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, as required by projects.
- Relevant industry training or certifications (e.g., CSCS, NVQ in Highways Maintenance or Road Marking, traffic management qualifications) are desirable.
