Principal Mechanical Design Engineer – Inside IR35
A leading engineering business that designs and manufactures the imaging sensor technology behind some of the world's most significant space science missions, from Earth observation to deep space exploration, is looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to assist them on a specific project.
The roleYou'll take designs from concept through to detailed manufacturing drawings, covering assembly and test jigging as well as transport packaging. Working alongside the Mechanical Engineering Team Leader, Process Engineers, Project Lead Engineers and Project Managers, you'll own the mechanical engineering documentation for gate reviews, including design and analysis reports, test plans and manufacturing drawings.
What you ll do- Lead mechanical engineering development across the project, translating customer specifications into robust, manufacturable designs
- Own new product introduction from initial requirements through to production, meeting all mechanical requirements at each gate review
- Present technical documentation clearly to both internal teams and external stakeholders
- Contribute to design reviews with constructive, well-evidenced feedback
- Identify technical risks early in the design phase and resolve them independently or as part of a wider team
- A Mechanical Engineering degree, with hands-on delivery experience in Space or Aerospace (or closely related sectors) using formal NPI processes (SRR, PDR, CDR)
- Strong CAD skills, ideally in Creo
- The ability to interpret FEA results and translate them into design improvements
- Sound knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes and mechanical systems
- Strong communication skills and comfort working across technical and non-technical teams
- IMechE Chartered status
- A Master s degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Familiarity with ECSS or MIL-STD standards
- Working knowledge of Creo and Windchill
- Experience with thermal and stress hand calculations
- Exposure to requirements management tools such as compliance verification matrices, DFMEA and risk registers
