We are currently seeking an experienced Waste Operator to join the luxury cruise vessel Orient Express Olympian
.

  • Embarkation: 01 April 2027
  • Contract: 6 months ±1 month

Requirements:

  • Previous experience as a Fitter on board cruise ships
  • All valid STCW certificates
  • Good command of English
  • Valid references and/or recommendations from previous employers

Description and Main Purpose of Job: The Waste Operator is a dedicated day-work rating responsible for the safe handling, sorting, processing, and storage of all solid waste generated onboard. Operating under the Hotel Engineer, the role ensures strict compliance with the vessel's Garbage Management Plan, environmental regulations (MARPOL Annex V), and public health standards, while performing any additional general technical duties as reasonably required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Waste Handling & Segregation:
    Receive, accurately segregate, and process all solid waste streams (plastics, recyclables, domestic waste, hazardous items) from all departments in strict accordance with the ship's Garbage Management Plan.
  • Machinery Operation:
    Safely and efficiently operate all garbage processing equipment, including glass crushers, cardboard balers, and compactors, ensuring all machinery is used according to manufacturer instructions. Promptly report any processing machinery defects to the Hotel Engineer.
  • Storage & Port Offloading:
    Organize and maintain the garbage holding areas and the refrigerated garbage room. Prepare compacted waste and assist in the safe, orderly offloading of garbage to shore reception facilities during port calls. Monitor waste volumes and immediately report any improper waste segregation by other crew members.
  • Housekeeping & Hygiene:
    Conduct continuous deep cleaning, sanitization, and odor control of the garbage processing room, storage areas, bins, and transport trolleys to prevent pest infestations and public health hazards.
  • Safety & Compliance:
    Comply strictly with all safety instructions, isolation procedures, and the correct use of PPE. Ensure personal compliance with work and rest hour regulations while actively contributing to pollution prevention measures.
