About You

As Magnet Engineer, you'll take full ownership of magnetic subsystems on our front end and FFA systems, from design through to manufacture, test and integration. You'll work closely with accelerator physicists, systems engineers, and mechanical and electrical engineers to design magnets that focus and steer the beams in our particle accelerator systems.

This is a hands-on, high-ownership role for someone who wants to build things themselves, not just analyse them - comfortable deriving their own requirements, negotiating trade-offs with other stakeholders, and rapidly iterating in a fast-paced environment.

You bring a systems engineering mindset and a sense of urgency, moving fluidly between design, analysis, manufacturing and integration without waiting for perfect conditions to start building.

About StandardX

There is infrastructure that defines eras. The steam engine made the industrial world possible. The internet created an economy. StandardX is building the next one.

Some of the most essential materials on Earth are also the rarest. Isotopes are the invisible backbone of modern life - curing cancer, keeping industrial systems resilient and fuelling the fusion reactors that will power the next century. Yet the infrastructure that produces them is ageing, fragmented and increasingly unable to keep up with demand.

We're a world-class team of nuclear engineers, deep tech operators and doctoral-level scientists building the UK's first isotope refinery: a single proprietary platform, deployable anywhere, producing the full portfolio of critical isotopes at scale - turning chronic scarcity into abundance.

Exceptional team. Massive problem. If you want to work on something that matters, really matters, this is it.

Key Objectives
  • Own the design, analysis, manufacture, test, and integration of magnetic subsystems, including the iron core, solenoid coils and magnet positioning system.
  • Derive your own requirements to the greatest extent possible, understanding their relationships to other parts of the system and negotiating with stakeholders as they're transformed into hardware.
  • Work cross-functionally with accelerator physicists, systems engineers, and mechanical and electrical engineers to design magnets that focus and steer particle beams.
  • Rapidly iterate on manufacturing processes and development tests in a fast-paced environment.
Your Responsibilities Design & Analysis
  • Design and analyse high-field magnets for our particle accelerator systems
  • Perform trade studies and drive architectural decisions, understanding their impact on the wider system
Manufacturing & Build
  • Own the manufacturing processes for the iron core, solenoid coils, and magnet positioning system
  • Machine your own parts where needed and work hands-on through prototyping and build
Test & Integration
  • Commission magnetic subsystems in prototypes, testing and validating against requirements
  • Rapidly iterate on manufacturing and development tests as designs mature
Systems Ownership
  • Act as a Responsible Engineer with full ownership of your projects end-to-end
  • Understand how the whole accelerator works, not just your own subsystem
Requirements
  • Experience designing high-field magnets in applications such as EV motors, drones, MRI machines, transformers, particle accelerators, or fusion reactors
  • Experience with CAD tools such as OnShape, Solid Works, Fusion
    360, NX, Catia, or Creo
  • Experience with an EM solver such as Opera or ANSYS Maxwell
  • Some experience performing static structural FEA and validating models with test
  • Experience machining your own parts on a mill or lathe
Ideal Experience
  • Proven experience designing and analysing high-field strength magnets for particle accelerators, fusion reactors, EV motors, drone motors, MRI machines or transformers
  • Experience using OPERA Electromagnetics Simulation tool, ANSYS Maxwell, or equivalent EM simulation software
  • Mechanism design experience, particularly linear actuators and gearboxes
  • Experience with rapid design, analysis, manufacturing, test and integration of systems with tight budget/schedule
  • Hands-on workshop experience: familiar with common hand and power tools, tapping holes, band saws, deburring wheels and similar
  • DFM experience involving processes such as CNC machining, CNC tube bending, brazing and precision assembly

We know great candidates rarely match every point on a list like this. If most of the above resonates and you're excited about the mission, please apply.

Benefits
  • Private Health Cover, with the option to add dependants.
  • Life Assurance (Death in Service) at 4x salary.
  • Salary sacrifice pension, with 4% employer contribution.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme.
  • EMI Share Options.
