Job description:

The Environmental Manager position in Poplar involves overseeing environmental compliance for a major infrastructure project, with responsibilities spanning design, construction, and programme integration.

This full-time, site-based role offers a salary between £60,000 and £65,000 per annum.

Working pattern:
Full-time, site-based. An established joint venture delivering a major infrastructure project in Birmingham is looking to appoint an experienced Environmental Manager to support its construction operations. This is a key site-based position responsible for managing environmental compliance, providing technical guidance and ensuring environmental requirements are fully integrated across design, construction activities and the wider project programme.

Candidate profile:
Candidates should possess substantial experience in construction environmental management, with strong knowledge of compliance frameworks and the ability to influence project delivery. The role requires a proactive approach to integrating environmental considerations into all operational phases, ensuring standards are consistently met throughout the project lifecycle.

Key responsibilities
  • Provide environmental advice and support to construction, design and delivery teams.
  • Manage, challenge and assure compliance with environmental commitments, legal requirements, consents and project controls.
  • Ensure environmental requirements and mitigation measures are embedded within construction methodologies, designs and programmes.
  • Coordinate environmental activity across areas including ecology, landscape, heritage, water, flood risk, waste, carbon, contaminated land, noise and vibration, air quality and soils.
  • Engage with subcontractors and their environmental representatives to ensure requirements are understood and effectively implemented.
  • Lead the preparation and review of site environmental plans, assessments and supporting documentation.
  • Monitor environmental performance, identify compliance risks and drive corrective actions.
  • Investigate environmental incidents and non-conformances, ensuring lessons learned are shared across the project.
  • Work closely with consents, assurance, sustainability, design, commercial and health and safety teams.
  • Identify environmental training requirements and support the delivery of site-based awareness and training.
  • Lead and support members of the environmental team.
  • Identify and deliver opportunities for environmental and sustainability improvements throughout construction.
About you
  • Exenstive environmental experience, ideally gained within construction, civil engineering or major infrastructure.
  • Experience working on large-scale infrastructure projects, such as rail, highways or other complex linear developments.
  • A background with a main contractor, civil engineering consultancy or specialist environmental contractor.
  • Strong knowledge of construction environmental management, compliance and assurance.
  • Experience managing environmental design, mitigation measures, consents and site controls.
  • The confidence to challenge construction methodologies and designs where environmental requirements have not been sufficiently addressed.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with site teams, technical specialists, subcontractors and senior stakeholders.
  • A full UK driving licence and willingness to drive project vehicles between sites.
  • A relevant environmental qualification, professional membership and a valid CSCS card would be advantageous.
