£83,292 – £100,032, plus an additional £4,194 London Weighting Allowance (if applicable) with an excellent Civil Service Pension

As the UK's independent nuclear regulator, our mission is vital to the nation's safety and security. We protect society by ensuring safe nuclear for a secure and sustainable future. We're looking for experienced Radiation Protection professionals to join our specialist inspector team, applying their expertise across a diverse range of UK nuclear sites and activities while helping to shape radiation protection standards across the sector.

The role

As a Nuclear Safety Inspector specialising in Radiation Protection, you'll assess and inspect radiological protection arrangements across the UK's civil nuclear industry, helping to ensure people are protected from the risks posed by ionising radiation. Your work will include assessing safety cases, emergency arrangements and regulatory compliance, while contributing to research, guidance development, training and national and international engagement.

This is a unique opportunity to gain insight across the wider nuclear industry, observing radiological protection practices at a range of duty holders and using that experience to help influence good practice across the sector. You'll join a highly supportive team of specialist colleagues, where your expertise will be valued and you'll continue to broaden your knowledge through varied technical work and extensive training.

About you

You'll bring:

  • Extensive experience applying radiological protection principles and dose optimisation techniques.
  • Experience advising on compliance with radiation protection legislation and preparing or reviewing safety cases and risk assessments.
  • Knowledge of the nuclear sector or another high-hazard industry.
  • Strong analytical, communication and influencing skills, with the ability to assess complex technical issues and exercise sound professional judgement.
  • A degree (or equivalent) in a relevant scientific, engineering or technical discipline, together with Chartered status or equivalent professional standing.

At ONR, you'll become part of a collaborative team of experienced Radiation Protection specialists, working together to protect society and support the safe use of nuclear technology. You'll have the opportunity to expand your expertise, influence radiation protection practices across the UK nuclear industry and contribute to work that has national and international impact.
