No two days are quite the same in this role, but you can expect to be involved in a variety of engineering development activities that help shape and deliver railway infrastructure projects.
You might start your day reviewing project remits and meeting with engineers, project managers and stakeholders to challenge requirements, identify risks and explore opportunities to add value. Working collaboratively across disciplines, you'll assess engineering options, considering factors such as safety, reliability, operational performance, maintainability and constructability in the context of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC).
As projects progress, you'll analyse technical data, review compliance with industry standards, and participate in risk assessment workshops to ensure proposals are robust and fit for purpose. You'll work closely with colleagues from different engineering disciplines to manage interfaces, resolve technical queries and maintain effective change control, assessing the impact of any proposed changes on cost, programme and performance.
Throughout the day, you'll prepare and review technical reports, support option selection activities, and develop engineering solutions through the early project lifecycle. You'll also contribute to engineering assurance activities, carry out cross‑discipline design reviews, and help prepare the information required to take projects into detailed design.
Alongside your project responsibilities, you'll share your expertise with junior engineers and trainees, providing guidance, mentoring and support to help develop the next generation of engineering talent.
This is an opportunity to combine technical expertise, problem‑solving and stakeholder collaboration to deliver safe, innovative and sustainable rail solutions.
