Around year four, structural engineers discover whether their experience is four years deep or one year repeated four times. The difference is almost always the project list.

This London role sits in an award winning structural and civil engineering practice known for working with existing buildings: appraising them, strengthening them, extending them and occasionally talking clients out of demolishing them. Alongside that sits considered new build across residential, commercial and cultural schemes. It is the workload that builds engineering judgement fastest, because existing structures do not behave like the textbook says.

You will run your own packages and small schemes, survey and assess real buildings, work directly with architects, and have your thinking reviewed by engineers who enjoy the technical argument. Chartership support is structured and the practice has a strong record of getting people through.

There is also the quiet career maths: engineers who can handle existing buildings are getting scarcer just as the work gets more plentiful, and that scarcity compounds in your favour every year.

The studio is central, design focused and collegiate, with the kind of engineers around you that make the next four years count double. Salary is between £43,000 and £55,000, plus a competitive package and hybrid working.
