Location: Greater London

Royal Association for Deaf People (RAD), founded in 1841, is one of the oldest charities working with deaf people in the UK. We celebrate deaf culture and community and innovate to deliver services that deaf people want and need. We are looking for an Honorary Treasurer Trustee to join our board.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain an overview of RAD's financial affairs
  • Advise the trustees on measures needed to ensure RAD's financial sustainability
  • Review the financial policies and procedures, reserves policy and investment policy, recommend their approval to the board and ensure compliance with these policies
  • Advise the trustees on the financial implications of RAD's strategic plan; ensure financial plans prepared by the Chief Executive align with the strategic direction
  • Ensure that the financial resources of the organisation meet its present and future needs
  • Monitor RAD's investments and ensure they are consistent with RAD's policies and legal responsibilities and that there is no conflict with the aims and objects
  • Ensure that investments generate a good rate of interest and are held in financially secure institutions
  • Chair the Finance Committee meetings
  • Lead on the selection and appointment of RAD's external auditors
  • Review the draft annual budget prepared by the Chief Executive Team and recommend its acceptance by the trustees
  • Act as a bank signatory
  • Chair the annual audit clearance meeting and review the management letter for any issues arising and ensure these points are addressed; following this meeting, recommend the approval of the annual accounts to the board
  • Ensure that appropriate insurances are maintained
Qualifications
  • Charity leadership experience
  • Sound knowledge of income generation and business development at a senior management/strategic level in the charity sector
  • Knowledge of charity and/or contract law
  • Understanding of charity financial sustainability and how to achieve this
  • Financial experience and/or accountancy qualifications
  • The ability to analyse proposals and examine their financial implications
  • Experience of charity finance (desirable)
  • The ability to communicate financial information so that non-financial trustees are fully informed
  • A commitment to RAD's Mission, Vision, Values and Ambitions
  • An understanding of the deaf community and/or specific related business/sector expertise
  • Experience of collaborative working
  • A willingness to actively participate in discussion and challenge constructively
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • A willingness to meet the minimum time requirement
  • Impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidentiality and maintain boundaries
  • A commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion

This role is unpaid, but out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed. Trustees are expected to attend four board meetings per year, additional training days, strategy meetings and sub-committee meetings as necessary. Additional time to support the activities of the organisation through expert guidance and/or participation in events and activities will be encouraged.
