Job summary

Ofgem is at the forefront of the fight to strengthen Britain’s energy market and protect consumers from financial instability, driving bold action to ensure a resilient and investable retail sector. We’re looking for a Senior Financial Supervisor to join our Financial Supervision team and help shape a greener, fairer and more financially robust energy system. Ofgem is Great Britain’s independent energy regulator.

We’re at the forefront of change across the energy sector, driving toward Net Zero whilst protecting energy consumers, especially vulnerable people. We’re offering a permanent opportunity within our Financial Resilience and Controls Directorate at a pivotal time for the energy market. You’ll join a dynamic and friendly team that plays a central role in strengthening supplier resilience, helping to ensure risks are appropriately managed and that consumers are protected from the impact of supplier failure.

This is a high‑profile role with direct engagement across the sector and influence over how financial risks are understood and addressed. You’ll work across finance, risk and regulation, contributing to the supervision of energy suppliers and supporting the development of a resilient, competitive and investable retail market. Through close engagement with regulated companies and collaboration across Ofgem, you’ll help form evidence‑based judgements that inform decision‑making and shape market outcomes.

We’re looking for someone with a strong background in finance, insolvency or risk management, who brings robust analytical capability and sound judgement. You’ll be confident working with complex financial data, influencing stakeholders, and communicating technical insights clearly to a range of audiences. A recognised finance qualification or relevant commercial experience is essential.

In return, you’ll join an inclusive organisation that values expertise, collaboration and continuous improvement. You’ll benefit from flexible working arrangements, generous civil service pension and leave entitlements, and the opportunity to work in a mission‑led environment where your contribution directly supports consumer protection and market stability. We have a critical purpose to foster financial resilience across the energy retail market, ensuring a better balance of risks between suppliers and consumers and reducing the likelihood and cost of widespread failures.

In this role, you’ll help drive that resilience, supporting sustainable competition, protecting consumers and enabling the market conditions needed to deliver Net Zero.

What you will do
  • Develop and deliver robust financial analysis to support the supervision of domestic and non‑domestic energy suppliers.
  • Contribute to complex projects and financial data tasks under minimal supervision, and independently deliver smaller projects or work streams, ensuring high standard and timely outputs.
  • Engage with internal stakeholders and influence outcomes, collaborating within a diverse team.
  • Communicate complex data and analysis to non‑expert audiences, building effective relationships and successfully influencing and challenging external partners.
  • Support strategy, operational delivery, and policy development across a broad range of activities including stakeholder engagement, analysis, policy development and project management.
  • Promote a culture of inclusion, supporting diverse voices and experiences of colleagues.
Essential Criteria
  • Recognised finance qualification (e.g. CCAB, CFA, MSc Finance) or relevant financial or commercial experience.
  • Background in finance, insolvency, risk management, corporate finance, financial supervision or related field.
  • Proven record of high performance and substantial achievements in past positions.
Lead Criteria
  • Excellent quantitative and qualitative analytical skills.
  • Proven experience of working with internal stakeholders and influencing outcomes.
  • Experience of collaborating within a diverse team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to communicate effectively complex data and analysis to non‑expert audiences.
