Role Summary
The Principal, European Credit, is responsible for originating, underwriting, and executing structured credit investments across Europe, with accountability for deal outcomes and portfolio performance. The role combines transaction leadership and team development, while contributing to the continued growth of the platform’s structured credit franchise.
Team DescriptionCredit Investments manages assets in excess of C $80billion with investments ranging from $100million to over $1billion. The European Credit team invests in cross‑over and sub‑investment grade corporate and structured debt in Europe, focusing on private credit, liquid credit, and structured credit. This role will focus primarily on the structured credit side of the team.
Accountabilities- Lead underwriting, internal investment committee process, execution, and monitoring of multiple simultaneous investment opportunities across the structured credit landscape.
- Assist in deal origination, maintain accountability for deal outcomes.
- Contribute to setting the platform investment strategy and portfolio construction; organize and prioritise deal pipeline.
- Build working relationships with colleagues and leaders across the firm, company management teams and investment partners, and third‑party advisors.
- Perform and manage detailed due diligence processes (including scoping and hiring third‑party advisors).
- Direct and design the development of complex financial models to assist in investment evaluation, structuring and financing.
- Lead the negotiation and execution of agreements and other transaction‑related documents.
- Develop detailed investment committee recommendations and take a major role in both presenting and answering challenging technical questions.
- Oversee and manage multiple external parties (lawyers, accountants, tax and commercial advisors, etc.) and build new relationships with advisors/partners to help with deal sourcing.
- Oversee and mentor junior members of the team, troubleshoot issues/questions and offer guidance and support.
- Collaborate with colleagues within the wider Credit Investments division and CPP Investments as a whole.
- Relevant work experience in structured credit as a credit investor across multiple European markets and jurisdictions.
- Significant relationship management experience including responsibility for managing relationships with portfolio companies and other external stakeholders.
- Strong research, analytical, financial modelling, valuation, problem‑solving skills and ability to think creatively.
- Experience managing successful negotiations with multiple stakeholders and executing a wide range of agreements.
- Experience leading a small underwriting team, developing junior team members, and working towards a common goal.
- Experience in working with LLMs and their expanding role in diligence for structured credit investing.
- An advanced degree or certification (CFA) is an asset.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
