With us, you'll always be moving forward.

What does our internal audit team do?

Today's organisations face strategic, financial and operational risks that can prevent them from achieving goals. We take a deep, objective look at a business to ensure it has the right systems and control processes to manage potential threats.

A career in internal audit gives you front-row access to how organisations operate. We visit clients throughout the year to carry out fieldwork, test existing controls and strategies, and then write an audit report with management actions to address improvement areas identified.

We work with a diverse client base across the public and private sectors, including local and central government, NHS Trusts, educational organisations, charities, banks and other corporates. This varied client list provides a strong foundation to build your business knowledge.

What can you expect?

At RSM, you'll be a key member of our team from day one. You’ll be involved in client work quickly, initially as part of a larger team before taking on individual responsibility for projects. The breadth of services and clients will help you kick-start your career.

A typical week may include being on client sites for a day or two, with travel from home (up to about 1 hour 30 minutes). On other days you may work with colleagues in your nearest RSM office or remotely from home with online supervision as appropriate.

RSM's graduate apprenticeship in internal audit is varied, interesting and rewarding. No client is the same, so you’ll be constantly challenged. Alongside hands-on experience, you’ll benefit from on-the-job training from senior team members and access to internal training courses to develop in the role. With our support, you’ll become a trusted adviser to your clients in the future.

When you join, you’ll work towards professional qualifications by completing a 3-year graduate apprenticeship. This includes the CIA qualification (Certified Internal Auditor) for the first 18 months, followed by the CMIIA qualification (Chartered Member of the Institute of Internal Auditors) for the remaining 18 months.

Qualifications and study options

We offer a limited number of vacancies to study towards the ACA qualification with ICAEW, or Chartered Accountancy (CA) with ICAS or CAI. Eligibility requires graduates with either 112 UCAS points across 3 A Levels (or an equivalent Level 3 qualification), or 104 UCAS points across 4 Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers or Irish Leaving Certificate (Higher Level). Please note this is subject to availability.

Study options will be discussed during the assessment process. The qualification training we offer is fully supported with study leave and training costs are met by RSM. To successfully achieve qualifications you will need to commit personal time in the evenings and weekends to study.

You will need

Internal auditors spend a lot of time working independently, so we look for enthusiastic self-starters who are quick to learn and enjoy a challenge. You’ll be fully supported during audits with a dedicated line manager and core team. You’ll work on a wide variety of projects, so adaptability and strong organisation are essential. Strong verbal and written communication skills are required for meetings and written reports.

Flexible

working and diversity

We support flexible working to help you manage family and other responsibilities alongside work commitments. For roles outside Central London, a full UK driving licence and regular access to a vehicle are required by the end of the 6-month settling-in period. For London roles, access to a car is desirable but not essential.

RSM values passion, personality and originality alongside exam results. We also promote Diversity and Inclusion to create a sense of belonging for people of all identities, backgrounds and cultures. Our clients come from diverse backgrounds, and our teams reflect that diversity to better understand client needs.
