What is the purpose of the Financial Accountant?
  • Working with the Financial Accounting & Control Manager to ensure implementation, enforcement and monitoring of internal control procedures. Performing relevant tasks in relation to this such as review of journals and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Monitoring and forecasting cash flow and maintaining appropriate treasury management procedures and controls including appropriate banking mandates.
  • Preparation of quarterly VAT returns and oversight of tax compliance within the organisation.
  • Critically evaluating, developing and embedding financial processes and procedures and ensuring these are fully documented.
  • Supporting the Financial Accounting & Control Manager in the delivery of the Annual Report & Accounts and preparation of Trading Company and Child Line statutory accounts, including meeting the requirements of the external auditors.
  • Deputising for the Financial Accounting & Control Manager in areas of decision making and line management, offering support, guidance and mentoring to the Finance Officers as appropriate.

What will I be doing as a Financial Accountant?
  • Manage year-end close, audit processes, and preparation of statutory accounts, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery.
  • Maintain strong financial control through oversight of reconciliations, journals, payroll, and balance sheet integrity.
  • Manage cash flow, treasury activities, and banking relationships to ensure effective liquidity and compliance.
  • Oversee VAT, tax compliance, and intercompany transactions while providing technical guidance across the organisation.
  • Drive improvements in financial processes, support and mentor team members, and contribute to reporting and decision-making.
What skills do I need to be a Financial Accountant?
  • Newly qualified or finalist level accountant with experience of working in a financial function of a complex organisation.
  • Up to date knowledge of charity accounting (SORP), UK accounting standards, direct taxes, VAT and other applicable legislation. Ability to interpret and apply this legislation to the NSPCC's circumstances.
  • Experience in the production of consolidated Statutory Accounts and dealing with external audit requirements.
  • Experience in the evaluation, documentation, implementation and enforcement of financial control procedures.
  • Experience of overseeing and reviewing reconciliations, with the ability to identify errors and guide staff in the resolution of issues.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to enforce adherence to rules and standards.
  • Able to work under pressure with conflicting priorities, manage workload and deliver to deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, particularly the ability to convey financial issues to non-finance staff.
  • Proactive approach and skill in creative problem solving with experience implementing new financial controls and procedures.
