About the Role

Reporting to the Manager Tax EMEA, the Principal Tax EMEA provides technical expertise in the management of corporate and international tax matters and supports BHP’s tax obligations and external reporting requirements across the EMEA region, including the UK, Netherlands and Switzerland.

The role takes ownership of assigned advisory, compliance and tax reporting activities, working closely with regional and global Tax colleagues, Treasury, Finance and Legal to provide practical advice, manage tax risk and support commercial decisions.

Key Accountabilities

  • Interprets and applies tax law and accounting principles to determine appropriate tax treatment for proposed and historical transactions, developing technically robust positions and clear, commercially informed recommendations.
  • Manages assigned corporate tax compliance and reporting activities, including the preparation or review of tax computations, returns, payment calculations and current and deferred tax reporting, coordinating with Finance, service delivery teams and external advisers.
  • Provides tax advice and implementation support for treasury and financing activities, including loan relationships and derivative contracts, and for corporate transactions such as reorganisations, distributions and legal entity simplification.
  • Applies an understanding of BHP’s business context, operating model and ways of working to support sound decision-making and the effective implementation of tax advice.
  • Sources and analyses financial, commercial and legal information to support evidence-based decisions, clearly documenting assumptions, technical judgements and recommended actions.
  • Identifies, assesses and communicates tax risks, applies BHP’s tax risk management and governance requirements, and escalates material or uncertain matters to the Manager Tax EMEA.
  • Supports the Manager Tax EMEA in developing audit and controversy strategies and manages allocated enquiries, information requests and dispute work streams, coordinating responses with internal stakeholders and external advisers.
  • Builds effective relationships with Treasury, Finance, Legal, regional/ central Tax teams and external advisers, collaborating with transfer pricing and other tax specialists where required and communicating complex matters clearly to non-tax stakeholders.
  • Monitors UK and international tax developments, including Pillar Two, assesses their relevance to the regional portfolio and supports implementation and policy input in coordination with the wider Group Tax team.
  • Uses financial systems, data analysis and appropriate technology to improve the accuracy, efficiency and control of tax work, identifying and implementing opportunities to simplify and automate recurring processes.
