Purpose of the role
Zego Insurance Limited (ZIL) is the Group's regulated insurance carrier, based in Gibraltar and supervised by the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission (GFSC). As Interim Finance Lead, you are the ultimate owner of ZIL's financial health, accuracy and operational integrity. Because ZIL underwrites risk on its own balance sheet, the role demands deep, specialised expertise in insurance carrier accounting and technical reserves, not broker or agency finance.
This is a hands-on "player-coach" role. You'll own the end-to-end financial accounting cycle, ensure strict adherence to Gibraltar and insurance regulatory standards, and design and enforce robust financial controls. As a GFSC-regulated person, you carry personal regulatory responsibility for the accuracy and timeliness of ZIL's financial reporting.
What you will be doingInsurance balance sheet and financial accounting
- Own the general ledger and the insurance balance sheet in Net Suite, ensuring accurate accounting for premiums, claims, commissions, reinsurance recoveries and profit-share arrangements.
- Lead and execute the month-end and year-end close, producing management accounts (P&L, balance sheet and cash flow) tailored to an insurance carrier, delivered to agreed Group and Board reporting deadlines.
- Prepare and submit annual statutory accounts under UK GAAP (FRS 102) and the applicable Gibraltar Companies Act requirements, and support regulatory returns to the GFSC.
- Ensure all balance sheet accounts, bank and fiduciary accounts, and intercompany balances (including MGA/ZIL positions) are rigorously reconciled every month, with the ledger reconciled to actuarial reserves before submission.
Actuarial partnership and capital management
- Act as the bridge between Finance and Actuarial: understand, validate and integrate technical reserve calculations (IBNR, UPR, URR and similar) into the ledgers, and reconcile management accounts to reserving figures.
- Support Solvency II reporting as applied in Gibraltar, including inputs to QRTs, the SFCR and the ORSA, and help monitor capital adequacy so the business maintains appropriate buffers.
- Partner with actuarial, underwriting and pricing teams to analyse loss ratios, combined ratios and profitability by product line, translating technical data into commercial insight for the Board.
Financial controls, audit and risk
- Design, implement and enforce robust financial controls and SOPs, particularly around payment approvals, counter party exposure and credit terms, to prevent fraud and eliminate reconciliation discrepancies.
- Act as the primary point of contact for external auditors and the GFSC. Manage the annual audit end to end, from planning through to sign-off, closing findings and embedding fixes so issues do not recur.
- Ensure timely, accurate filing of corporate taxes and other regulatory financial submissions, working with Group tax where relevant.
- Oversee daily cash flow and liquidity, produce rolling cash flow forecasts, and support investment income accounting to ensure claims-paying ability and operational funding.
- Own the ZIL finance system stack (Net Suite), ensuring it integrates cleanly with policy administration and actuarial data to maintain absolute data integrity.
- A fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
- A proven track record in insurance carrier (balance sheet) accounting. You understand the mechanics of insurance financials; broker or agency-only experience is not sufficient.
- Demonstrated experience working closely with actuaries, and a strong conceptual grasp of reserving, pricing and capital modelling.
- Familiarity with Solvency II reporting (QRT, SFCR, ORSA) and statutory accounts preparation;
