Job Description & How to Apply Below

Referment is working with a UK analytics and actuarial consultancy whose pensions actuarial department advises trustees and sponsors on a wide range of defined benefit issues. The team spans core actuarial valuations and member options advice through to strategic advice and project work, and sits alongside a specialist pension risk transfer practice. The department is growing, with a varied client mix from small schemes to those with over a billion pounds in assets.

The Role

You’ll work across a range of clients, each with their own priorities, dividing your time between pensions actuarial and pension risk transfer work — the split is flexible depending on your strengths and interests. Everyone in the department has their own client mix, so you’ll work with lots of different people to advise a range of clients.

  • Coordinate actuarial calculations with less experienced colleagues and review those calculations along with the associated advice.
  • Within the pension risk transfer team, take a central role in broking insurance transactions, liaising and negotiating with insurers, attending meetings and managing projects.
  • Work on schemes of varying size, from small to large and complex.
  • Take opportunities to join other specialist teams, for example covering longevity, GMP equalisation and Collective Defined Contribution schemes.
  • Attend industry networking events.
What We’re Looking For
  • A qualified pensions actuary with demonstrable experience working in the UK pensions actuarial consulting environment.
  • Excellent UK pensions technical knowledge, with the ability to review core technical work such as actuarial valuation and member options calculations and pensions accounting.
  • Awareness of current issues and key hot topics in the UK pensions industry.
  • Ability to draft clear communications and presentations.
  • Ability to delegate tasks to less experienced team members, explaining the wider context.
  • Commercial awareness, including the ability to consider agreed budgets when carrying out work.
  • Excellent organisational skills and a team-player mentality, able to build strong relationships both within and outside the firm, and happy to support less experienced team members.

No prior experience of pension risk transfer work is required — training is provided; you simply need to be keen to learn and get involved.

This could suit a qualified pensions actuary who wants broader client exposure, or one interested in developing de-risking expertise alongside core actuarial work.
