Key Responsibilities

Are you a confident communications professional ready for a new challenge in a fast‑paced environment where no two days are ever the same? The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) for Surrey is seeking a talented and motivated individual on a fixed‑term 12‑month contract who can bring new and creative ideas to our small but busy communications team.

Daily activity in this job is never dull and could range from handling an enquiry from a national newspaper, organising a community event or shooting a video with the Commissioner for our social media platforms.

The successful candidate will need to be a self‑starter who can demonstrate a keen eye for detail, strong writing skills and a sound knowledge of communicating with a range of audiences.

They will also need to have a flair for creating and delivering eye‑catching content which can increase our reach across a number of platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, You Tube and Instagram.

The post-holder needs to be comfortable dealing with the media, key stakeholders and our partner organisations. Experience in video editing, photography and using Word Press is desirable but not essential.

The Police and Crime Commissioner is the voice of the public in policing and plays a crucial role in setting the policing priorities for Surrey, supporting victims of crime across our county and holding the Chief Constable to account for the service residents receive.

Policing is in the public eye more than ever and we are looking for someone who can identify creative opportunities to engage more local residents and community groups in the work of the Commissioner’s office.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Communications Team in ensuring a coherent, strategic approach is taken in communicating the work of the OPCC.
  • Play a key role in maintaining and further developing the OPCC’s online presence, including social media, website and use of the OPCC brand.
  • Plan and manage engagement events for the OPCC, including Policing Your Community public meetings and increasing engagement with consultations such as the annual council tax survey.
  • Provide communication and engagement advice and briefings to the Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and their team, as required.
  • Design and produce supporting promotional & communication material such as leaflets, graphics, digital assets, video, posters and newsletters.
  • Support responses to enquiries from the local, national and police industry media.
  • Assist public affairs on behalf of the OPCC, including monitoring political developments locally and in Westminster and preparing briefings and advice for the Commissioner for upcoming engagements and events.
  • Identify and seizing opportunities for positive engagement with our communities in Surrey, including minority and disability groups, ensuring accessibility is considered to strengthen this online and offline.
  • Evaluate the success of our communications and engagement activities.
  • Provide support to the Commissioners PA team and the Complaints, Compliance and Equality and Diversity Lead to ensure that information about the Commissioner, OPCC and Force is readily available to the public.
Skills & Experience
  • Degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of communication and community engagement skills.
  • Experience using social media and ability to grow our reach across all platforms.
  • Experience of communications planning and campaign development, reputation management and building relationships with key stakeholders.
