Job Description12 Month Contract With A local Authority
Job Purpose
To deliver a high-quality environmental health and public protection service, ensuring compliance with environmental health legislation and contributing to the Council’s corporate priorities. The postholder will undertake complex investigations, enforcement activities, and regulatory interventions to improve public health, safety, and environmental standards across the borough while supporting the development of junior officers.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct inspections of commercial premises and enforce environmental health legislation.
- Investigate complaints, incidents, and complex environmental health cases.
- Prepare reports, case files, witness statements, and prosecution documentation.
- Lead and deliver targeted enforcement operations and projects across health and safety, food standards, infectious disease control, and licensing enforcement.
- Provide specialist environmental health advice and guidance to businesses, stakeholders, and members of the public.
- Manage complex investigations through to resolution, formal enforcement action, or prosecution where appropriate.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with businesses, partner agencies, and stakeholders to promote compliance and improve standards.
- Support, mentor, and provide professional guidance to junior Environmental Health Officers and colleagues.
- Contribute to service improvement initiatives and the achievement of departmental objectives.
- Hold an Environmental Health Registration Board (EHRB) approved qualification, such as an MSc, BSc (Hons), or Diploma in Environmental Health awarded by EHRB or REHIS.
- Be EHORB registered or have successfully completed the CIEH Assessment of Professional Competence (including deemed compliance via grandfather rights), Assessment of Professional Development, or EHP Portfolio and Professional Discussion, and be recognised as a Registered Environmental Health Practitioner.
- Demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development (CPD).
- Significant experience in environmental health enforcement and regulatory services.
- Strong knowledge of environmental health legislation and enforcement procedures.
- Experience managing complex investigations and legal casework.
- Location: London Borough of Hackney (field-based with flexible working arrangements)
