Private Sector Housing Officer with experience

About the Job

Work within Newham’s Private Sector Housing Standards team to carry out multi‑agency inspections of unlicensed properties, licence condition checks, and inspections of properties in disrepair. You will support tenants and safeguard the private rented sector through regulatory work and project initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct inspections of unlicensed properties and check licence conditions.
  • Carry out housing inspections for disrepair and property licensing issues.
  • Compile evidence and take cases to court or the First Tier Tribunal.
  • Provide regulatory support to protect tenants and promote fair private rented housing.
  • Manage your own caseload and make independent decisions with a problem‑solving approach.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across teams and contribute to continuous improvement.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Knowledge of the Housing Act 2004 and related housing legislation.
  • Practical experience serving and enforcing housing legislation.
  • Competency in using the HHSRS rating system.
  • Experience conducting comprehensive housing inspections.
  • Experience compiling evidence and presenting cases in court or tribunal settings.

  • Excellent communication and team‑working skills.
  • Strong organisational and time‑management abilities.
  • Capacity to work independently and exercise sound judgement.
  • Adaptability and willingness to undertake flexible working arrangements.
Additional Information

Newham offers a relocation package of up to £7,000
* to assist staff who relocate for this role.
