Good Growth

Good Growth is responsible for delivering and implementing the Mayor’s environment, transport and economic strategies and for the effective implementation of the London Plan. The Directorate is also responsible for regeneration (where the programme is not housing led), enterprise, growth, capital projects and design work.

About the role

As a Senior Policy and Programme Officer, you will play a key role in developing and delivering policies and projects that support the Mayor’s ambition to clean London’s air. Working closely with colleagues across the GLA Group, London boroughs, government bodies and a wide range of stakeholders, you will help drive London’s progress towards meeting World Health Organization (WHO) air quality guidelines and improving health outcomes for all Londoners.

You will lead the delivery of complex programmes, managing performance, budgets and key stakeholder relationships. The role requires strong policy development, programme management and analytical skills, with the ability to turn technical evidence into practical solutions that achieve meaningful improvements in air quality.

What your day will look like
  • Support the delivery of a portfolio of air quality work, including statutory responsibilities and key Mayoral priorities, projects and programmes.
  • Manage air quality projects delivered by the GLA and external partners, including procuring and overseeing consultants and contractors where required.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with government departments, London boroughs, international organisations and partners across the public, private and voluntary sectors.
  • Work collaboratively across the GLA Group and with external stakeholders to ensure opportunities for joined-up working and shared outcomes are realised.
  • Provide clear and timely advice on air quality and environmental issues to the Mayor, senior leaders, Assembly Members, GLA colleagues and external partners.
  • Draft briefings, reports, correspondence and responses to Mayoral and Assembly questions.
  • Keep up to date with developments in air quality policy, legislation and technical evidence, and use this knowledge to inform decision-making.
  • Support the development and delivery of policies, projects and programmes that contribute to Mayoral priorities and demonstrate measurable outcomes.
  • Ensure London’s diverse communities are considered in the development and delivery of air quality policies and programmes, helping to deliver fair and inclusive outcomes for all Londoners.
Skills, knowledge and experience

To be considered for the role you must meet the following essential criteria:

  • Experience in the field of air quality, sustainable transport, or related environmental policy.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret air quality issues and data in relation to urban areas, including causes, effects, and possible solutions.
  • Ability to use a range of office and statistical software including word processing and spreadsheet packages. Ability to use statistical software is desirable, but not essential.
  • Experience undertaking project-based work and preparing clear and concise reports, presentations, and briefings on complex and sensitive issues for a range of different audiences.
