Job Summary
The post is for Clinical Scientist - Radiation Safety and Diagnostic Radiology Physics at Barts Health NHS Trust. The Trust includes The Royal London Hospital, Mile End Hospital, Whipps Cross University Hospital, St Bartholomew's Hospital and Newham University Hospital, with a wide range of radiological imaging equipment.

Job Description

Job responsibilities
The Radiation Safety Section provides radiation safety and physics support to users of ionising radiation at a time of rapid development in digital imaging technology, artificial intelligence and expanding clinical applications of radiation. The team is a friendly group of physicists and technologists. You will have opportunities to gain experience across the spectrum of our work, including testing of radiation and imaging equipment, data handling and analysis, audits and software development work.

You will have a BSc (Hons) degree or equivalent in physics or a major physics component and HCPC registration as a clinical scientist.

Person Specification
Essential

  • BSc (Hons) Physics or equivalent
  • MSc in Radiation Physics or equivalent experience
  • NHS STP training in medical physics or equivalent experience
  • Registered Clinical Scientist or expectation to achieve registration within 1 year

Desirable

  • Knowledge of the HRA research study approval process
  • Progress towards any of RPA, RWA or MPE portfolios

Experience

  • Relevant experience in radiation safety applied to the use of ionising radiation in healthcare and diagnostic radiology physics
  • Able to perform tests on a wide range of diagnostic x-ray imaging equipment (basic to more complex systems under supervision)
  • Proficient in Excel, Word, Access; able to set up databases and extract information
  • Understanding of patient and staff risks from radiation exposure and image quality requirements for diagnostic procedures
  • Able to produce written reports within defined timescales

Knowledge

  • Specialist knowledge in radiation and imaging physics as applied in medicine
  • Techniques to measure performance and radiological safety of X-ray imaging equipment
  • Knowledge of radiation protection legislation in healthcare and biomedical research
  • Knowledge of patient dosimetry techniques and software
  • Understanding of clinical applications of DR equipment and protocols

Skills

  • Able to operate a wide range of diagnostic imaging equipment
  • Able to analyse and interpret data; able to devise methods of analysis
  • Able to interpret and apply relevant guidance and legislation
  • Able to work off-site alone according to SOPs and use initiative in non-standard conditions
  • Good verbal and written communication skills; able to explain complex information to staff at various levels

Other

  • Ability to prioritise work and produce work in a timely manner
  • Able to work effectively as a member of a team
  • Occasional requirement to work extended hours
  • Professional approach and ability to perform duties with aids/adaptations as needed
