Sonographer Trainee in Obstetric Ultrasound and Fetal Medicine

. This is an exciting opportunity to join a full‑time, two‑year training course at UCLH in partnership with University College London (UCL). The role will develop both academic and professional skills in Obstetric Ultrasound and Fetal Medicine.
The post holder will work as a supervised trainee subject to competency training for ultrasound scanning of pregnant women at 11‑14 weeks gestation, anomaly scans, and fetal well‑being assessments in the Ultrasound Screening Unit (USU) training programme is split into two years: the first year is a junior trainee role, and upon successful completion of the required competencies the trainee progresses to a senior position in the second year.
Senior trainees will perform obstetric ultrasound and contribute to the training of juniors. Clinical competencies are reviewed throughout the course.
Training is complemented by opportunities in the Maternal Fetal Assessment Unit, the Antenatal Clinic and the Labour Ward. Daily teaching sessions, case discussions, and opportunities for teaching and research are integral to the programme. A certificate of training will be awarded at the end of the Fellowship, in association with the completion of the higher MSc degree.
The post holder will be entitled to apply for a free ISUOG (International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology) trainee membership for the duration of the fellowship.
Job Responsibilities- Perform routine ultrasound antenatal assessments in all three trimesters at the USU.
- Conduct targeted scans at 11‑14 weeks gestation, carry out anomaly scans and fetal well‑being assessments.
- Progress to senior trainee responsibilities, including training juniors and contributing to clinical care in fetal medicine clinics.
- Participate in daily teaching sessions and case discussions.
- Allocate time for study and research within the 37.5‑hour working pattern; study time outside working hours may be required.
- Maintain competency documentation and participate in clinical audits and continuous professional development activities.
- Upper second‑class Bachelor’s degree in a relevant health‑care discipline or an equivalent UK medical qualification (MBBS). Applicants should be health‑care professionals (medical doctors, midwives, radiologists, radiographers or sonographers) with a primary qualification in medicine.
- GMC registration with licence to practice.
- MRCOG Part 1 qualification.
- Demonstrable evidence of a wide range of general radiographic experience.
- Experience working as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.
- Experience in Obstetric ultrasound.
- Experience in clinical teaching and research, including publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
- Experience in undertaking clinical audits and/or CIPs.
- Awareness of patient responsibility and advocacy.
- Ability to lead new projects.
- Good standard of computer literacy.
- Working knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and clinical governance.
- Demonstrate enthusiasm and the ability to motivate others.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills within a multi‑disciplinary team.
