Position: Band 3 Ophthalmic Technician | Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust

The post holder will play a key role in supporting the delivery of safe, effective, and efficient ophthalmic diagnostic services at Finchley Memorial Hospital and Wood green Diagnostic Centre. Working both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, the role involves carrying out a range of ophthalmic clinical assessments to support patient care and clinical decision‑making.

The post holder will perform specific diagnostic investigations including the measurement of visual acuity, intraocular pressure, visual fields, ophthalmic imaging, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) testing. Patients will primarily be seen in a diagnostic clinic setting. Training will be provided, however, a basic understanding of ophthalmic terminology and patient history‑taking is required.

This is a Monday to Saturday service operating on a pro rota basis. The successful post holder may be scheduled to work at either Finchley Memorial Hospital or Wood Green Diagnostic Hub on any day between Monday and Saturday, according to the service rota and operational requirements.

Undertake ophthalmic diagnostic tests including visual acuity, intraocular pressure measurement, visual fields, OCT scans, and ophthalmic imaging.

Provide clear instructions and reassurance to patients, adapting communication for individual needs. Record and update patient information accurately on electronic systems (e.g., Cerner / Medisight).

Maintain and clean diagnostic equipment, reporting faults as required.

Support smooth clinic flow, including patient preparation and assistance where needed. Adhere to infection control, confidentiality, and health and safety policies at all times. Participate in training, audit, and teaching of junior staff and students when appropriate.

Work collaboratively with the diagnostic hub team to deliver high‑quality, safe, and efficient patient care.
