Orthopaedic Technical Instructor

Band 4 Technical Instructor - Orthopaedics:
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Technical Instructor to join our inpatient orthopaedic physiotherapy team.

You will play a key role in the therapy management and treatment of patients who have been admitted with a wide range of orthopaedic conditions including total knee replacements, total hip replacements and foot/ankle surgeries. You will also be expected to support the delivery of the Guys Orthopaedic Outreach service in the community. This is a permanent post and will require the post holder to deliver high quality orthopaedic physiotherapy interventions for orthopaedic patients on a number of inpatient wards.

Main

duties of the job
  • Work independently within the orthopaedic physiotherapy team
  • Prescribe, progress and develop exercise programmes for patients undergoing rehabilitation post orthopaedic surgery
  • Deliver pre-education to those awaiting joint replacements
  • Assist and support rotational team members

You will have completed NVQ Level 4 or have significant experience of working with patients with in a rehabilitation setting. You will have excellent communication, motivational and team working skills.

This post would suit an applicant who is able to manage their own time effectively and be confident to work unsupervised for part of the day.

About us

The Elective Orthopaedics Physiotherapy service is a 7-day service, so the post holder will be required to work on scheduled weekends and cover some later shift patterns.

You will be supported by the Senior Physiotherapists in the team and receive a full induction and regular in-service teaching in the team and with the band 4 TI group.

You will also have a yearly personal development plan.

Person Specification Qualifications/education
  • Completed NVQ Level 4 or Part 1 City and Guilds certificate in Physiotherapy (with prior experience in a therapy unit) or assessed satisfactory completion of an equivalent training course in a therapy unit, the course being of no less than 200 hours duration and validated by the Department of Health.
  • Established experience in a therapy unit/department
  • Individual with significant experience in relevant work environment who can demonstrate competence to a standard that would gain the NVQ Level 4 through the Accreditation of Prior Experience and learning may also be considered.
  • Member of assistants clinical interest group
  • Relevant orthopaedic or amputee courses
  • Patient treatment experience using relevant clinical skills
  • Experience working in a ward environment
  • Experience of assessing patients requiring walking/other aids and instruct them in their proper and safe usage
  • Experience of treating patients within an Orthopaedic environment
  • Previous experience working in a community setting
Skills/knowledge/ability
  • Able to maintain own caseload of patients requiring technical proficiency/knowledge as delegated by the physiotherapist
  • Demonstrate ability to prioritise own workload in order to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrate good interpersonal skills in order to communicate and work effectively with other clinical staff and patients from a diverse range of social and cultural backgrounds
  • Knowledge and experience of a range of manual handling techniques
