Lead Research Radiographer for CT scanning

The primary purpose of this exciting new role is to lead the provision and delivery of high-quality clinical and research CT imaging services that will include a new state-of-the-art Photon Counting CT scanner being installed at the Royal Brompton Hospital. This newest element of the Bromptons extensive diagnostic facilities will be part of an important strategic collaboration between the School of BMEIS and the Heart, Lung & Critical Care (HLCC) Clinical Group of Guys & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust.

Clinical research will be the core mission for the collaboration, with all eligible clinical patients planned to be approached for consent to research participation. Clinical academics hosted by Kings and HLCC will work together to establish a new world-class research program in Photon Counting CT.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will have primary responsibility for promoting a research culture among the radiographer and imaging delivery teams, whilst also maintaining excellence within clinical services, meeting the needs of referrers and offering high standards of patient care. They will perform their duties in accordance with local and national regulations and guidelines concerning ionising radiation and health and safety. They will be responsible to the Royal Brompton CT Imaging Lead and will assist them with creating and updating procedures and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for clinical and research procedures.

They will be required to work across all the CT scanners at the Royal Bromptons imaging facilities. They will be responsible for the induction, assessment, training, and workload allocation of radiographers undertaking CT scanning procedures. They will be accountable to the Director of Clinical & Research Imaging Operations and will work with them to provide regular reports to the Guys & St Thomas NIHR Clinical Research Facility (CRF) and the Health Tech Research Centre (HRC) in Cardiovascular and Respiratory Medicine.

Job responsibilities

Imaging & Research Responsibilities

  • To provide high-quality patient care and radiographic services undertaken in CT scanning at the Royal Brompton Hospital.
  • To assist in the development and updating of clinical and research exam protocols, and to ensure scanning techniques are optimised in relation to dose and quality for the clinical and/or research question.
  • To assess whether the patient is fit enough to undergo a particular procedure, decide the best means of transferring a patient, and of carrying out a procedure and to initiate and assist in patient resuscitation in an emergency.
  • To assess CT images for quality, clinical significance and adherence to research protocol and to take appropriate action when necessary.
  • To carry out IV cannulation for the purpose of administering radiographic contrast agents.
  • To undertake procedures, including obtaining informed consent from patients and completing case report forms, as part of research projects.
  • To support other CT radiography staff to actively participate in research projects in accordance with their skills and experience, including leading training and education sessions when required
  • To input and work closely with others into the development of research protocols, documentation and related procedures.
  • To coordinate research scans including scheduling, completing relevant documentation and collecting relevant data for invoicing for individual scans as per departmental practice.
