Band 7 / Band 6 Trainee (depending on experience) Clinical Nurse / Midwife Specialist in Early Pregnancy and Emergency Gynaecology

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Early Pregnancy & Emergency Gynaecology Clinical Nurse / Midwife Specialist at Band 7 with a qualification in Medical Ultrasound OR a nurse / midwife with a real interest wishing to undergo training at Band
6. This is a full‑time permanent position at our Early Pregnancy & Acute Gynaecology Unit (EPAGU) (The Elizabeth Suite), at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital.

The Elizabeth Suite is a bespoke EPAG Unit specifically designed to provide emergency care and support for women with complications in early stages of pregnancy up to 17 + 6 weeks and emergency care for acute gynaecology complications unrelated to pregnancy through direct internal referral from our Emergency Department and other services.

This Unit has a range of rooms, each designed for scanning and clinical investigation. Minor out‑patient procedures are also performed including manual vacuum aspiration, Word catheter insertion and intrauterine contraceptive device insertion and retrieval.

The service ethos is to provide time‑critical rapid assessment of our women within a one‑stop clinical model in close liaison with our A&E and GP colleagues. The Unit delivers specialist, evidence‑based, holistic care to women with early pregnancy and gynaecology complications in an environment that supports patient choice and dignity. The multi‑professional team consists of consultant gynaecologists, clinical nurse specialists, clinical research fellows and specialist sonographers.

The successful candidate must have experience of gynaecology and early pregnancy management and treatment. They must have or wish to pursue a qualification in early pregnancy and gynaecology scanning. The post requires excellent prioritising and verbal and non‑verbal and counselling skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • To receive, triage and manage referrals independently.
  • To chase, interpret and manage blood test results, histology results and other.
  • To manage outpatient caseloads independently.
  • To independently manage the telephone clinic and telephone protected lunch hours.
  • To independently run scan clinics.
  • To participate in counselling, discussion of options and management of cases.
  • To assist / participate in procedures.
  • To assist with emergency admissions and urgent cases.
  • To independently run the clinic / lead by managing the capacity on a daily basis, escalating concerns and liaising with consultants.
  • To participate / conduct audits.
  • To teach / support other colleagues in learning pathways.
  • To work flexibly as per rota supporting clinic cover on weekends, bank holidays and cross‑site cover when necessary.
Notes

If starting as a trainee, the post‑holder will be expected to complete their sonography training and competencies within two years of starting in post.

It would be expected that on successful completion of their training the post‑holder would be able to work independently as a Nurse/Midwife Sonographer/Specialist and automatically progress to band 7.
