Position: Lead Pharmacist for Hepatology
Location: Greater London

Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust (LGT) is seeking an experienced and motivated pharmacist to provide clinical leadership and operational oversight of the clinical pharmacy service to Hepatology
, including support to the Trust's viral hepatitis pathways.

The post-holder will be responsible for coordinating and delivering a high-quality, patient-focused clinical pharmacy service to hepatology services, working closely with consultants, MDTs and the wider pharmacy team to ensure safe, effective and cost-efficient use of medicines. This includes supporting antiviral treatment pathways, medicines optimisation initiatives and service improvement activity.

The role includes professional leadership and supervision of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians supporting hepatology services, alongside a continued clinical commitment. The post-holder will contribute to audit, reporting and engagement with regional networks, supporting delivery of Trust and system priorities within a defined governance framework.

Main duties of the job

To lead the delivery of a safe, effective and patient-centred clinical pharmacy service to Hepatology.

To provide clinical expertise and medicines optimisation support to hepatology MDTs, including antiviral therapies and complex medicines.

To support monitoring, follow-up and continuity of care for patients within hepatology and viral hepatitis pathways.

To provide professional leadership, supervision and development of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians within the hepatology service.

To contribute to service improvement, audit and reporting activity in line with Trust and regional requirements.

To support cost-effective use of medicines, including contribution to biosimilar switching and high-cost drug optimisation where appropriate.

To maintain a clinical presence and act as a senior clinical role model within the pharmacy team.

Clinical services and patient care
  • To provide senior clinical pharmacy input to hepatology services, including participation in MDT working as appropriate.
  • To support medicines reconciliation, monitoring and optimisation for hepatology patients.
  • To ensure safe prescribing, administration and monitoring of high-risk and specialist medicines.
  • To support the investigation of medication-related incidents and implementation of action plans.
  • To act as a clinical role model, demonstrating high standards of pharmaceutical care.
Leadership and service development
  • To lead and develop the clinical pharmacy service to Hepatology within agreed objectives.
  • To contribute to the development and implementation of local and national guidelines and policies.
  • To support audit, data collection and reporting requirements related to hepatology and viral hepatitis services.
  • To work collaboratively with senior pharmacy colleagues to ensure effective service delivery.
Divisional and financial support
  • To support monitoring and management of medicines expenditure within Hepatology.
  • To contribute to identification and delivery of cost‑saving and medicines optimisation initiatives.
  • To promote evidence‑based, cost‑effective prescribing within the specialty.
  • To support business cases and service developments involving medicines as required.
Staff management, education and training
  • To support the induction, supervision and development of pharmacy staff within the hepatology service.
  • To contribute to appraisal, objective setting and performance management in line with Trust processes.
