Location: Greater London

We are seeking an experienced Senior Occupational Therapist to work in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team, to assess and treat older people with mental illness, enabling clients to remain within their home environment/community with their preference and best interest.

The Occupational Therapy (OT) role will undertake generic initial assessment and OT specific assessment/intervention and provide a range of individual and/or group treatments.

To be responsible for an appropriate caseload of care co‑ordination and specialist OT assessment & treatment.

To develop and maintain links with MHCOP OT service, relevant statutory and non‑statutory agencies throughout City and Hackney.

To provide clinical supervision and support practice education when required.

To carry out functional assessment in Dementia Diagnosis.

Main duties of the job
  • To provide assessments of the service user's environment, how their accommodation is meeting their needs and whether there are any unmet needs; presenting this to placement review meetings as required.
  • To select and use validated standardised assessment tools routinely and in practice, exhibiting clinical reasoning skills; to include the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) assessments.
  • To plan and implement service user‑led interventions, using graded activity and a wide range of treatment techniques to achieve outcome‑focused recovery goals.
  • To work with service users in a variety of settings in order to provide the most effective assessment and interventions.
  • To consider both physical and mental health needs as part of the OT assessment and to refer to appropriate agencies where there is need for equipment.
  • To undertake assessment of daily living skills to ascertain level of functional ability, risk factors, level of support / accommodation needs to support the development of community care plans.
  • To use clinical reasoning to assess how the client's mental health difficulties impact on their function in the occupational areas of self‑care, productivity and leisure as well as their performance in the cognitive, inter‑/intra personal and physical areas.
  • To assess client's mental state and identify any significant risk factors pertaining to community integration and undertake risk assessments.

Person Specification
  • Education/ Qualification/ Training – University Qualification at least Second Class
  • HCPC registration
  • Evidence of regular updating and ongoing development of role and skills – Practice Placement Educators Course
  • Functional Assessment in Dementia Diagnosis
  • Experience of working with people with severe and enduring mental health needs.
  • Experience of carrying a caseload of clients
  • Experience in using a range of standardised OT assessments.
  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience of partnership working in promoting socially inclusive
  • Evidence based Occupational Therapy assessments and interventions relevant to reablement
  • Social inclusion and recovery models
  • Skills in promoting recovery, social inclusion, health promotion & relapse prevention
