Rotational Specialist Speech & Language Therapist

Due to an internal promotion, an opportunity has arisen to join the Homerton Band 6 rotation on a fixed term contract. The role offers the post holder opportunity to develop experience within our Adult Community Rehab Team, Acute inpatient Team and at the specialist Regional Neuro Rehab Unit based at the Homerton.

The post holder will have the opportunity to develop existing skills in the management of acute dysphagia across a range of conditions, as well as delivering specialist rehabilitation for progressive neurological disorders, stroke and brain injury. There will also be the opportunity to work towards videofluoroscopy and tracheostomy competencies.

Rotational Band 6 staff have numerous opportunities for project working, training and working with third sector service providers, supervision of students and junior members of staff.

Main duties of the job
  • To work across acute, rehabilitation and community services as part of a rotationalprogramme.
  • Be responsible for and provide the specialist assessment and intervention to adesignated caseload of clients with communication and / or swallowing difficulties in hospital and/or community settings.
  • Participate in the delivery of a Saturday service in the hospital team.
  • Help support patients' recreational programmes by occasionally working evenings.
  • Supervise junior staff, therapy assistants and students.
  • Actively contribute to the development of the Adult SLT service and services thatform part of the rotation e.g. the Regional Neurological Rehabilitation Unit(RNRU) and the Adult Community Rehabilitation Team (ACRT), by taking a lead on projects as required in line with Trust objectives, local policy, patient needs and government agenda.

Person Specification Education and Qualifications
  • Degree level or equivalent qualification in SLT recognised by the RCSLT
  • Current HCPC registration
  • Postgraduate training/short courses relevant to working with adults with acquired communication/swallowing difficulties
  • Membership of RCSLT
  • Further study in related area
Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to independently assess, diagnose and treat patients presenting with communication / swallowing problems of neurological origin with complex and challenging behaviour and cognitive difficulties
  • Ability to form therapeutic relationships with others who may be under stress and have complex, challenging communication difficulties…
