Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist

The closing date is 05 March 2026

Are you a child and adolescent psychiatrist with a passion for working with children and young people? Are you interested in working in a dynamic and innovative CAMHS team?

This is an exciting opportunity for a child and adolescent psychiatrist to join one of our well‑established, diverse and supportive CAMHS teams.

Adolescent and Young Adult Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Service (AYAS) is a CAMHS service supporting children and young people's emotional wellbeing needs with evidence‑based therapeutic interventions. AYAS is comprised of a varied multi‑disciplinary team, staffed by experienced CAMHS clinicians including educational psychologists, child psychotherapists, social workers, systemic family therapists, refugee care specialists and trainees from those disciplines.

AYAS is part of the Child Complex Service within the Complex Mental Health Service Line. We work closely with partners from referring local authorities, schools and voluntary agencies.

Candidates are requested to use the section "Supporting Information" on the application form to set out their reasons for applying and their suitability, referring to the person specification, for this post.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide intake, assessment consultations and psychotherapy assessments of patients referred to the Adolescent and Young Adult Service, based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including formal psychological testing and interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the client's care.
  • Make highly skilled evaluations and decisions about treatment options considering both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family or groups. This will include the recognition and understanding of how race, religion, age, disability, gender, class, culture, ethnicity and sexual orientation affect individuals, families or groups.
  • Be responsible for implementing a range of psychoanalytically based psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups, adjusting and refining formulations and drawing on different explanatory models.
  • Formulate and devise treatment and management plans for referred patients based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the patient's problems, taking into account multiple theoretical perspectives and employing methods based on evidence of efficacy across the full range of care settings.
  • Provide clinical supervision to trainees and less experienced practitioners.
  • Provide consultation as required to external agencies.
