Job Summary

The pharmacy clinical trials service at Barts Health has seen significant investment over the last few years and the evolving team of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and assistants manage an ever‑expanding portfolio of clinical trials.

We are looking for a self‑motivated and enthusiastic pharmacy technician to develop skills within clinical research.

This is a permanent, full‑time position based at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, Monday‑Friday with additional weekend and bank holiday commitments where required. Full training and development opportunities will be provided and flexible working will be considered.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the efficient and smooth running of operational pharmacy aspects of dispensary‑based clinical trials.
  • Support the clinical trial coordinator to ensure all documentation, including standard operating procedures, is up‑to‑date and compliant with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) requirements.
  • Oversee the day‑to‑day running (setup and maintenance) of the dispensary based trials managed through Barts Health.
  • Ensure all trials are managed according to regulatory requirements for research.
Essential Qualifications
  • Level 3 Diploma in Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians or equivalent.
  • Registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
  • Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) qualification.
  • ILM Level 3 Leadership and Management qualification or equivalent.
  • Quality Improvement training.
  • Practice Supervisor or Train the Trainer or equivalent HR training qualification.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Specialist technical or management modules or equivalent experience in aseptic preparation.
Essential Experience
  • Proven experience of good performance in previous posts.
  • Previous significant experience working in clinical trials.
  • Demonstrable experience of providing pharmacy professional training and supporting training.
  • Experience with undertaking appraisals, devising personal development plans, setting SMART objectives and creating action plans.
  • Experience of collecting, manipulating and presenting data in appropriate format using Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Experience of implementing change.
  • Experience of training staff, giving developmental feedback and implementing training plans.
  • Experience of recruitment and selection.
  • Leadership experience within a pharmacy service, including organising a day‑to‑day service.
Desirable Experience
  • Experience with managing staff, including conducting disciplinary meetings and chairing meetings.
  • Previous experience working in aseptics.
  • Evidence of project management.
  • Experience in QI initiatives.
Essential Knowledge
  • Knowledge of all aspects of GCP, GMP and QA and clinical trial legislation.
  • Understanding of GPhC revalidation requirements.
  • Knowledge of medicines management systems at ward level.
  • Up‑to‑date knowledge of legislation relevant to pharmacy practice, e.g., controlled drugs, Health and Safety at Work.
  • Understanding of stock control systems.
  • Knowledge of drugs, side effects and where to find further information.
  • Knowledge of Safe and Secure Handling of Medicines requirements.
  • Understanding of the importance of adherence to SOPs and legislation.
  • Understanding of patient safety initiatives.
  • Understanding of risk management issues.
  • Understanding of clinical governance and its implications for service quality and audit.
Desirable Knowledge
  • Knowledge of aseptic practices.
  • Understanding of development opportunities available to pharmacy technicians.
  • Knowledge of trust systems such as health roster, Trac, e‑forms.
Essential Skills
  • Ability to answer complex enquiries and supervise processes, identifying deviations.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to a deadline.
  • Able to handle hazardous materials safely according to local procedures.
  • Intermediate IT skills including email, word processing, spreadsheets, accurate data entry and specialist pharmacy computer systems.
