About usThis is an exciting opportunity to join the UCL Division of Medicine.
The Division has approximately 400 staff with 130 independent investigators and is one of the largest department in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, within the School of Life and Medical Sciences. The Division brings together clinical and non-clinical scientists in an interdisciplinary environment for world-class research, teaching and patient-care. The Division located across two campuses, i.e. the Bloomsbury Campus and the Royal Free Campus (based on the site of the Royal Free Hospital).
Aboutthe role
The main purpose of this position is to act as the Safety Lead Advisor for the Division’s staff/space at the Bloomsbury & Royal Free campuses.
In this role, you will advise the Divisional Director on the implementation of the Division’s safety policy and plan and update the policy as necessary; monitor the day-to-day standard of safety management over all the sites of the Division of Medicine, address any safety issues and raise at appropriate levels; and work as part of a team with the Laboratory Operations Manager and the Local Safety Supervisors providing organisational skills and safety knowledge to support the functioning of the Division’s laboratory facilities within these buildings.
You will also be responsible for ensuring that health and safety inductions are carried out for all new starters at the Bloomsbury site.
Please note that this role may be eligible for hybrid working with a minimum of 80% on site. The expectations would be to work a minimum of 3 days at the Bloomsbury campus and 1 day at the Royal Free campus.

About youYou must have a degree in Science, preferably from a setting that included working in a life science/medical research laboratory and an Accredited Occupational Health & Safety qualification.
You have a good understanding of the legal framework for health and safety in the UK and Europe, implications of complying/not complying with health and safety and best practice, and a good knowledge of biosafety and microbiological containment regulations.
Experience in advising users on matters of health and safety, producing safety documentation and working in a science environment are also essential.
