Job summary

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated clinical scientist to join our team of nuclear medicine physicists within the Radiological Sciences Unit (RSU).

The successful applicant will be a HCPC registered clinical scientist who is certified to act as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE) in nuclear medicine and is passionate about leading improvement and delivering the best patient care.

Within the trust, the physics group supports a range of equipment across nuclear medicine and PET/CT including SPECT/CT systems, PET/CT systems, gamma counting equipment, dose calibrators and interoperative probes.

There is a comprehensive molecular radiotherapy service including I-131 for benign thyroid conditions, Y-90 Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) and Lu-177 Dotatate for the treatment of neuroendocrine tumours. We are also involved in the delivery of several novel therapeutic tracers for research purposes.

Through our external contracts, we support 5 gamma cameras and two PET/CT scanners. We are active in clinical and academic research, participating in several commercial and Imperial led clinical trials. There is significant involvement in the training of clinical and healthcare scientists and MSc teaching in conjunction with Imperial College London.

Main duties of the job
  • To plan, organise and implement integrated computer information systems for handling, analysing and interpreting Nuclear Medicine data and provide specialist expertise in the analysis of such data.
  • To ensure the successful training of trainee Clinical Scientists
  • Provide highly complex and specialised scientific support as the Medical Physics Expert as defined in the Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposures) Regulations 2017 (IRMER
    17) with regard to development of new techniques, problem solving and data analysis to nuclear medicine clinicians, technologists and senior managers
  • Develop and deliver day-to-day management of the Quality Assurance programme for nuclear medicine equipment within the Trust.
  • Planning and providing routine quality assurance, performance assessment, auditing assessments in support of Nuclear Medicine equipment. This involves high precision, complex measurements and safe and rapid preparation of radioactive test sources
  • Acceptance testing of new nuclear medicine installations across the Trust and for Service Level Agreement customers.
  • Day to day troubleshooting of all nuclear medicine equipment across the Trust and for Service Level Agreement customers.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision of junior nuclear medicine physics staff, trainee clinical scientists and scientific visiting staff.
